First Smartphone - help with purchase

Have read many of the post here and appreciative of all the knowledge shared. Somewhat overwhelming...lol. GSM, write to SD card, 8gb vs 16, VZW can't unlock XT1028, Global GSM, what size sim, which charger...etc.

Want to make the jump to a real smartphone. Hesitant to overpay (especially the monthly plan) for a poor experience. Basic requirements are voice quality, network availability (Seattle area), Ease of use, Internet (hotspot, browser) capable.

As a boater would like to run Navigation apps, and tide/weather updates. Email and general browsing. Possible networking onboard with GPS and Radar at some point in the future. Not planning to root or anything that technical unless it proves to be straight forward and easy.

Trying to decide how to purchase. Am thinking buy the handset from Motorola (LTE, 16gb), then buy a T-Mobile sim. T-Mobile did not offer the Moto-G that I could find.

Opinions ideas comments? Hoping to avoid incompatibility issues (KISS) principal and make a smooth user experience. Thxs

Hi Rook98101, and welcome to Android Forums :)

It sounds like you've already done most of the heavy lifting, and it also sounds like the Moto G (either the First Generation or the newly announced Second Generation) would be a great device at an unbeatable pricepoint for you.

And I think you're on the right track - purchase the device straight from Motorola, and then pick up a T-Mobile (or other GSM carrier) SIM card either online or in store.

Let us know if we can answer any other questions. :)

I can honestly say that I'm really happy with my 1st generation Moto G. I bought the unlocked, 16 Gig version straight from Moto. I use it on MetroPCS. The version I bought doesn't have the SD card or LTE, but I'm fine with the speeds I get on HSPA+. Let us know what you end up doing.

Thxs Folks! Pulled the trigger this evening. Will be back in a couple days when I can't figure out how to turn it on...lol.

Wanted to come back and say the new phone is a neat little device. Opened up a very large new world for me as a 50 something coming online via mobile for the first time.

#1 observation - this is the most uncontrolled insecure environment I have ever seen. Call me paranoid if you like, but every action taken on this device is geared to track and record my personal behavior.

Civil comments to my perception are welcome.

Is it even possible to minimize the invasion of privacy and still use the device? Have disabled 20 or 30 apps found running. Probably run into some issues as I go forward and download apps and begin to use more features. Is there a minimum required app list for basic phone functions?

Am ready to install the sim. What can I expect in terms of auto updates and setting changes done without my knowledge? I can't be the 1st person to have these questions. Is there a "new user guide" somewhere that covers all these many issues?

Who is the driver of the collection of personal data...Google? Is it any better to buy apps thru other sources? Does downloading the app on a laptop and then installing it to the device assist with privacy?

Help, my ass is hanging out...sorry for the long winded bitching.
