First stolen droid, tracking

personalt

Newbie
My wife Droid was stolen by one of her 2nd grade students. I am getting updates from Google latitude but she can't match the location with known addrese. I am assuming not much else I can do since no applications were installed in advance other the latitude?

Latitude is pretty spot on with the tracking, just pray that the little thief left the gps on and you should be good to go.

phone was found.... I was able to us the latitude to get me within a few hundred yards of the building where the kid lived. If we had no idea who took the phone tranglation wouldnt have gotten us close enough as there were three big buildings there. However once we were in the area my wife knew exactly who lived near there. Student who sits in the front row.

Google maps pointed here which is across the street from Palisades Medical center for those from hudson country area. The building where the phone was in was a few hundred yards away, the one in the background. It wasnt a perfect solution but worked well in this case.

When my wife called the principal to tell her what we figured out she had just gotten a call from the kids parents. The mother had found the phone in the kids backpack and called the school.

I would have gotten it back anyway but it was a fun hunt..

That being said... lets turn this into a learning experience for others. It is my understanding their are applications that you can use SMS to turn the GPS on. The kicker is I had downloaded one last night about midnight but didnt get a chance to play with it or install on my wifes phone.

Can anyone recommend an application that can
1. Turn on the GPS and report back a more exact position
2. remote wipe the phone. this was my wifes phone but I am sure if you search my email on my phone hard enough you can find bank account numbers, credit card number etc.. I am sure I am not the only one.

Can anyone make some recommendations for some apps here?

Wow! Good that you got it back.. but certainly a lesson into needing some time of security wipe. I'm subscribing this thread to learn...

I tried GPS tracker last night but GPS has to be on and the app won't turn it on. Mobile Defense is supposed to have some kind of advanced install but I haven't looked into it too much.

Haha, if I were that kid, I would never be able to look your wife/my teacher in the eye ever again. I'd transfer out of that school immediately! Of course, I'm not some little punk theif, so I don't have any worries!

Try Wavesecure! It's awesome :D

Only problem is , you must leave GPS on as It can not activate it itself :)

wavesecure seems to support the locking and remote wipe

I would think a core requirement would be that you can leave the gps off and turn it on remotely. Otherwise normal day to day use will drain that battery fast. but otherwise this looks like a nice program

Mobile defense is currently unavailable for CDMA (hence my previous post), but they are working on it. That was the first program I planned on downloading, until I discovered I couldn't.

Important Notice: Verizon DROID and Sprint Hero
We have recently implemented CDMA support and we are testing this release privately with a small group of users. Email cdma@mobiledefense.com to be notified when Mobile Defense is available for CDMA phones.
And for anyone interested in checking out the program while we wait... or for anyone not on CDMA...
