Root First time root help

Im trying to root my phone but i keep backing out because i want to be totally sure what im doing. Im getting my direction from xda developers. This is the guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526
When i plug my phone into odin the guide says to make sure it looks exactly like it does in the picture. Mine is a little different. Mine has the yellow box but different numbers. Is this okay? Does it matter? Mine says defcom 4. And also when looking for Rom does it matter if the version of the Rom is 2.3.5 when my phone is 2.3.6?

Not sure what you mean by "defcom4". Read it again. COM ports will vary from computer to computer. Mine said 0:[COM4] for example.

Yes, it absolutely matters when flashing ROM's what software version you're currently on. Why go back to 2.3.5 when you're on 2.3.6.

Do yourself a favor, read everything you can on rooting and loading ROM's on your phone. When you think you're done and understand it, read some more. You can never have too much information when tinkering with your device.

Oh, and that guide is what I used to root my SR on 2.3.6. Worked like a champ.
