First time rooter, need help!

Okay, I have been a Droid user ever since T-Mobile came out with the MyTouch. I had all sorts of issues with it, and have since changed to Sprint and the HERO. It is out of warranty, and I am not eligible for a full upgrade till next March, so I want to root my phone and flash a good, safe, quick and yes flashy ROM to it. I have the 2.1 update, the 2.32.651.2 version. I would like to streamline the actual apps that is actually installed on it, as I don't use any of the apps but one that came pre-installed. I have absolutely no clue as to how to root or flash a new rom on here, and was wondering if there is something like a "how to for dummies" install method. I am pretty good with computers, but I have read some install pages, and it just seems like a lot of hassle. I have installed the Launcher Pro app, and love the look and feel of it, but the HERO is just soo slow right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There are many helpful threads on this board just for this. I would link them, but my work internet is stupid slow today. My suggestion would be to look for z4root one click rooting to root your Hero, then DL ROM Mananger from the market. With the ROM Manager app you can flash a new recovery, and install the latest Cyanogen ROM. Then you will Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) installed on your Hero. This will greatly improve your phone and allow you to wait out your upgrade. I'm sure someone will come along here and provide you with links, but I have at least given you a rough outline for a quick root method and a stable ROM. :)

Go to thread that says "which version to root" 4 or 5 threads below this one it has z4root apk and many helpful links in it.

Thanks guys, but from everything that I have been reading, its a little more difficult than I was told. I am afraid that if I start poking around and trying to root it, and flash a new rom on it that I will screw something up, or worse, brick it and then I'm screwed! maybe I will just leave it. UGH. I hate this phone.

Just be sure to NOT flash a GSM radio baseband on your Sprint HTC Hero. Unfortunately, acuramn accidentally did that and bricked his original Sprint HTC Hero. :(

Thankfully, he was able to procure another Sprint HTC Hero. Now that is dedication to a handset. ;)

Thanks LBPHeretic for reminding me Ya he not the sharpest tool in the shed lol,And he rooted his 2nd phone all buys hes self:D

Flashing a gsm Radio is about the only thing that will brick your phone, so don't get too nervous.

Bro, rooting and flashing a Rom is a piece of cake now a days, easy to do with the one click apps, you will not brick your phone if you follow our advice and take it a step at a time, when you are ready we will walk you through the process. the first thing you will do is root your phone, then from there you you will flash a recovery image and then with that done you will then be able to create a back up of your stock rooted Rom, and then you will be able to flash any Rom you want and always be able to go back to where you started if you want too. simple as that.

See, and thats the thing....I cant afford to brick mine and then have to go find another phone. LOL

Okay. so everyone keeps telling me that its a snap to root and flash a rom onto the phone. walk me through it. I have looked at a couple dozen threads about it, and they all say different things. One big issue I see happening is that since I have updated to the last Sprint OTA update, it patched the root capability of my phone. and that if I do root it, and ever have to reset, it will go back to the crappy 2.1 update I have now. What to do? Mind you, I am an idiot when it comes to cells...so geek speak will go right over my head! LOL

Okay, so I took the plunge, rooted my phone, and now have access to that, i have played around long enough with it so that I am comfortable with the layout. I even have flashed a new ROM on it. My question is this. IS it possible to get all the old apps back, like the clock and weather app, the bookmarks and allof that stuff...or is that just part of the SENSE UI experience. I hate the CyanogenMod 6 ROM that I have and would love advise on a better one, or maybe even a SENSE ROM. Any Ideas anyone? And is it possible to take all that I have done off, and make it so its not rooted, and have the old ROM back on it?

Most are sense app and widgets, but there are other options, try Fancy widget for your weather clock, very similar. as for other apps there are many to replace what your looking for. As for a Rom, try the one I posted here b y AOSP, it is vanillas almost, but you can customize it to look exactly like the sense UI and this rom flies.
