Root First time rooting

Newbie
I have a stock evo 4g that I'd like to root, but have some questions/concerns prior to rooting. I have read the guides and searched lots for answers but have not found the answers to my specific questions.

In the guide it states to do a backup first. Will the backup programs back up all settings, apps with associated data, etc on a non-rooted stock phone so that you can then go through the root process and then auto-magically reinstall all of your apps, email settings, etc? Since the initial posting of the guide is there a better and/or preferred backup app for this? The 2 I am looking at are Ti backup (non root ver for the first time backup) and My backup pro but wasn't sure if there might be something better now.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i would use mybackup pro to back up all of your data and apps. and yes most likely all of your settings and data will be wiped during the process. so you may loose some info, but all of your contacts as long as they are linked to google will be automatically backed up.

Ya definetly use my backup. When u do get rooted get the root version. Free and awesome. Also use the root method in the sticky thread root for gingerbread. worked forst time. best method out there.

Is there an issue with using htc sync once rooted? I keep all of my contacts in outlook and use htc sync to sync my contacts. I then import them into dejaContacts. I have a few hundred contacts for my business and make extensive use of categories.

It might be worthwhile to to an export of your contacts to your SD card. It won't save your groups, but at least you'll have all the contacts saved in case anything freaky happens

Yes, I have to do this because I had contacts sent over from my Nextel.days. Go under the people app and hit menu, import/export, then export to sd. Once you've got your phone rooted and a ROM running, open the people app again, import/export import from SD, click on add all and it'll add all the contacts back in.
