Root First time

HSBHTC

Newbie
well managed to root my HTC Desire and get oxygen running on it. But not sure its fixed the lack of internal storage problem though, I thought that if i followed this guide:

1) Backup your SD card contents to your PC
2) Download GParted and Burn to CD/USB or use the Gparted with VMware guide.
3) Connect your device in Recovery mode and mount as USB mass storage
4) Resize the existing FAT32 partition from the back, leaving space after it and create an EXT partition in the space. Steps for the GUI are below.
In the drop down menu (top right) select the SD card (be careful not to select your HDD)
Right click on the FAT32 Partition and select resize
Press the Up arrow on "Free Space Following" until you have the desired sizes
Click Resize
right click in unallocated space and select New> EXT format of your choice
Click Apply

5) now you just need to flash your ROM with a2SD+ support.

You might be better off posting in the root subforum. If you want to move the thread there, press the "report" button and ask a moderator to move it.

So, first thing is to check whether your ext partition is being used. Install Quick System Info and see what is says about "a2sd storage" - how much is available, how much is used?

Edit: ah, beaten to it! :)

What does Quick System Info tell you?

SD Card Storage
Total: 28.80GB, Free 10.34GB

A2SD Storage
Total 1.00GB, Free 0.91GB

Internal Storage
Total 148MB, Free 75.86MB

System Storage
Total 25.00MB, Free 10.34GB

System Cache
Total 28.80GB, Free 10.34GB

...

Have I totally messed this up? I will report it and ask for the thread to be moved. Spent all day trying to do this feel well miserable about it all.

A2SD 1.00GB, Free 0.91GB

guessing thats not good news :(
It's better than A2SD 1.00 GB, Free 1.00 GB would be :)

There's about 99MB used - looks like it's working to me.

With Oxygen you don't get the dalvik cache moved by default. If you want that, there's a patch here that you can flash. That will free up some more internal space. If you want to undo it, just flash the ROM again (without a wipe).

You will also still have internal space used even with a2sd. App data remain in internal memory, and some apps contain large libraries which are also not moved (though there are ways of dealing with that).

With Oxygen being much smaller than a Sense ROM, you can free up more space by going S-Off and changing your internal memory partitioning. There's a section on this in the root memory FAQ. No need to rush - you've already saved a significant amount of space, and moving the dalvik cache will save more, but it's something you could investigate and think about.

ah that's great thanks for that, installed loads of stuff and it doesn't seem to be close running out of room. I don't really understand what the A2SD storage size means and I did look into the s-off thing but again didn't fully understand it. Given that it all seems to be working well I will leave it I think dont want to push my luck.

I don't understand a lot of it to be fair but have learnt a lot doing this and before I could not fit all the apps I needed onto my phone.

Thanks for your help everyone.
