Root First timers dumb root questions

Lurker
Hi - apologies in advance for stupidity of my questions - I'm looking for the easiest way to flash a new rom onto a branded HTC Desire and feeling a little overwhelmed with what I am reading.

Phone details are:

O2 (United Kingdom) branded
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Kernal Version: 2.6.32.15-gd96f2c0
HBOOT-0.93.0001
Bravo PVT4 SHIP S-ON
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.11.05.27

Erase size = 20,000

It's looking like unrevoked3 is the best way to root the phone (yes/no??) - but before I use it - do I need to do this goldcard business given my phone is O2 (UK) branded? Or will unrevoked3 work anyway? If it does - is it the new ROM that wipes out the o2 branding?

Is a gingerbread ROM a realistic option? My biggest problem with the desire is lack of memory, so if gingerbread is going to leave me with even less I might just stick to froyo (2.2.3 being the last one I think?)
If I were to go with gingerbread, and given I just want as near to stock HTC as possible - which ROM is recommended & where do I download it? Or do I need to be careful about versions due to the radio etc. on my phone? (All the radio stuff is what is really confusing me!)
Otherwise - ditto for latest froyo...where to download?
I've seen Desire Index - Everything Desire is here! at xda-developers but don't really understand it!

Also - is there a current 'best' or simply favourite step by step guide? I was going to follow 300866-guide-rooting-htc-android-2-2-lower-unrevoked-windows on this forum which makes more sense to me than any others I have seen...

Any help much appreciated

That's the best one so yes, use it. Before you do, read the faq linked in the first few paragraphs. Also read the root memory faq. These are all in the "all about rooting"thread and between them, answer all these questions

Yes of course. They're the best you can get as an all round machine.

Coming from several enterprise level IT environments, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that Dell cannot be beaten.

HP/compaq - shit
Ibm - overpriced and shit
MAC - for sheep, idiots and specialist designers. Overpriced
Lenovo - old ibm shit
Toshiba - made out of pub ashtrays. Also, shit
Acer - alright as a consumer machine but shit as enterprise kit
Sony - over priced and shit.

Since I needed enterprise level quality, specifications and durability, there was no other choice. Only those who don't know criticise dell

My i5 Toshiba has a Magnesium chassis! (You probaly go to more salubrious drinking establishments than myself). From what I know of Dell they are reliable but over priced, They rely on a customer base that sees its name in call centres, hospitals and local government offices and who can't be bothered to go researching the best machine for their needs.

Mine came with a free voucher for something, I forget what it was as it went in the shredder.

Sorry to hijack your thread Clive.

Dell have the best support for enterprise. They're reasonably priced. In fact the most bang for your buck. As I said I haven't got a consumer dell. All consumer laptops are shite compared to business ones. Any way end of conversation

Merry Christmas.

SUroot - thanks for the reply - and for the many guides you've written too!
Just one last thing - is there any particular ROM (either froyo or gingerbread) that you would recommend I use? You clearly know this stuff back to front so I'm more than happy to just use whichever you recommend.

Thanks again,
C.
