First verizon news from CES. Good and Bad.

I don't see any reason to switch from a Droid. This is the first time since the analog days that I've had a cell phone that I think I can get two or three years out of. And the fact that all the PDA features simply work, no messing around, is a nice bonus.

i don't see how ppl are switching out phones if they just started a new 2 year contract. are ppl paying full price for the phone or something?

all i have to say is HAHA to all those people that said "don't buy a droid! passion is coming in jan." this is why you don't wait for the next best thing.

What about just waiting for something worth buying? Tried both the Eris (display too small) and the Droid (don't like design) to no avail. Surely I shouldn't be required to settle on not-quite-what-I-want if I have to sign a lengthy contract and still dish out a pair of c-notes, should I?

I have been paying $400 a year on average for phones for the last 6-7 years. Most expensive was iPhone on launch day ($600) and cheapest was Droid ($199). I have no loyalty whatsoever to any carrier, provide me the best phone and I'll use your service (if it works, unlike AT&T at my new house), that is my philosophy. I'll use a phone for a while and when something better comes out, if it is enough of an improvement I'll buy it, pay retail, pay cancellation fees, whatever. I don't have a ton of money but the one thing I will save money for and put in my budget is the latest and greatest cell phones.

I am looking forward to a great android phone (Droid is only good because it has a keyboard, no keyboard it would be great) and a new iPhone so I can make a choice and move on from the Droid which has never been more than a phone I will just use until a really good one comes along.

so you are interested in the tablet?

uhm, the tablet is a phone right? ;p is there a difference between a tablet and a phone?

oh and what is a OLED display? .. "If this analyst is correct, these will be Motorola's first Android-powered smartphones with OLED screens."

also... it says

"A market analyst has predicted that two smartphones created by Motorola and running Google's Android OS could be in the offing for early January, with one headed for AT&T and the other for Verizon Wireless."

What would be considered "early january"? wouldn't that mean like, within a week after the show? (considering then it would be mid january) ...

yeah, the sholes tablet. i agree, it doesn't look like a phone. i am wondering if it will have the bump on the side (location for radios?- like the reverse chin on the droid).
may be a decent alternative for people not wanting the hard keyboard of the droid.

yeah, i do not think i'll ever use the keyboard which is the one thing thats been holding me back from buying the droid... when you refer to the "sholes tablet", would any phone that doesn't have a keyboard and is a single screen (ie htc's eris / apple iphone) be referred to as a tablet?

i don't remember seeing "keyboard" as any of the reasons the droid got number one cell phone by both time magazine and pcworld beating out the iphone. the keyboard does let it stand out and seeing how it's almost as slim as the iphone and that you have the option to use it or never touch it and the phone is still great makes your point mute.

if it is the sholes @ CES, i dont know if i particularly like it if it is the same thing that was accidently shown on their website. this is from another site that said something about it if u want to know more.

A Cortex A8 quad-core processor, a 3.7-inch-wide touchscreen, a 5 megapixel camera with flash and support for 3G are among the features listed for the device, which is frequently referred to as a "tablet." It will also feature 854-by-480-pixel resolution, according to the specs.
Android 2.0 is listed as the operating system for the device. It will feature an 8 megapixel camera.

The distinguishing "hump" protruding from one side of the XT701 likely features soft keys for video and stills, Hazelton suggested.
"I'm not a huge fan of the hump, but I think it makes sense when you're holding a camera in landscape mode," he noted.

A built-in gravity sensor, infrared proximity sensors, GPS, an FM Stereo, FM radio, Bluetooth 2.1 and a 3.5 mm headphone jack are among the other features listed.

All fine with me i guess but how big is it for it to be called a "tablet" by some... Specifications on early versions of the Sholes device had suggested it could be unusually large and heavy.

this is all from the link below if u wanna read it, its dated tho for 22nd

-139grams? i think the droid is 169grams. i like the weight reduction. (iphone is 135grams)

-32gig sd? lucky. most likely not installed-just max capable.

-10.9mm thick? droid is 13.7! (iphone is 12.3mm)

Lookin good!
can't find where the micro usb is located though.

The Sholes does look better than the Droid but not that much better. I'm still praying for an HTC/Verizon announcement.

i actually think that the design of that particular image of the sholes if thats what gets released here is quite sexy. someone listed some design specs but i didn't see anything about the dimensions of the phone besides the weight and thickness. anything about the length/width?

i dont expect anyone to have an answer to this but i'll ask anyway - im reading all these websites saying that the phone will be avaliable 'early january' .. what do you guys consider early january?

they also say that it will 'launch' next week - is this even plausable? I'm not too familiar with CES but is it possible for a phone to be released within the next couple days after the announcement? (if it were really an early january release, wouldn't it have to be released within a week of CES?)

I think it looks good. If the onscreen keyboard behaves itself this might be my first Android phone. The Droid's keyboards (physical and onscreen) make me want to declare war on everything. I don't need anything from HTC if this works out.
