I've liked just about every ROM I've tried to date (except Rubix... for some reason that one made my phone run slower than stock). Apex, GummyJAR, Liberty, Fission... you can't go wrong with any of them. They all have a few different characteristics, but to be honest I find that there isn't anything monumentally different that sets any of them apart from the other one.
Sure Gummy may or may not run a bit faster than Apex (depends on your device), Apex might have a better mixture of blur than Fission (if you like blur), and Fission may have more options than Apex or Gummy... but they are still all very similar, and better than stock forsure. With the bootloader being locked it's hard to create something that's a complete departure from what we get out of the box. The customization is very limited. That's not to say the devs haven't done a fantastic job in giving us custom ROMs, they have... it's just that they had to do it with one arm behnd their back and their shoelaces tied together.
That being said, my previous fav was Gummy due to the fact that it was stripped down as much as possible and ran faster than any other ROM, save Ultimate Droid. So when Liberty came out with the toolbox and what not I fully expected to try it out and run right back to GJ just like I had with all the other ROMs I tried after GummyJAR. I figured the options would load it down and make it run slower. This wasn't the case however. It in fact seems to run just as fast as Gummy and has all those options to boot. The thing is the options aren't actually built into the ROM, so they don't slow it down. You pull up the toolbox and when you want to make an adjustment, change the theme or whatever, you click on it and it downloads it off of the internet. Fantastic way to keep the speed of GummyJAR with all the customization possibilities any of the other ROMs offered (IMO).
So Liberty is my new everyday ROM. And heck this is 1.0 so I can only imagine where it's going to go from here. I'm sure (I hope anyways) they will find a solution for Exchange. And any and all bugs that may be in it (I've found very few so far) should get worked out over time. It's about as good as we're probably going to get for the DX if you ask me. With all the new devices coming out I'm sure we'll see less and less support for it as the devs tackle bigger and better challenges. I'm stilll holding out for them to find a way to crack the bootloader. If the Bionic comes with the exact same encription I'm thinking that will give the hacker community a second wind to get it cracked which would bennefit us and the D2 owners as well. That's my dream anyhow.
If it doesn't come out with the same type of lock, then it may be a hopeless quest for us. Since it won't matter as much anymore I don't see any big push to crack it coming. And without it cracked I'd say they've gone about as far as they can go with what the devs have to work with. This doesn't mean we won't see any new ROMs in the future, but they won't be exponentially better than what we already have. Just some further tweaking would be my guess.
So grab one of these ROMs (or all of them) and figure out which of them gives you the best Android experience. No one ROM is an 'every mans' ROM. There are certainly some that are more popular than others. But none of them are for EVERYONE. Which is why having the choice to try out anything that's out there is such an awesome part of the Android experience.
For me anyway.
