Help *Fixed* Another Music Problem - Can you help? *Fixed*

Hi Community,

I've had a good rummage around the forum and can't find what im looking for.

Problem: Samsung won't detect my MP3 files (in either stock music player or winamp).

What I've tried:
Drag and drop to my external SD.
Syncing with winamp.
Formatting the SD card in the phone and dragging music over.

Nothing works. The music is on the SD card but no app will find it. All tagged correctly and working on my spare HTC desire.

Having had my own problems with music on the SGS2, I have followed any relevant thread and I don't think I have seen this issue before.

If you mount the drives on your PC/Mac (Settings->Wireless and network->USB utiilities) and then unmount them, do you see the "Media scanner" notification in the notification bar at the top? Do you see it running when you boot the phone?

Have you tried different locations eg on the internal memory as well as the external SD card? It should work fine on both but I'm wondering if there is something about your SD card that the phone doesn't like.

Hi, some good points there.

Yes i do see the media scanner on start up and on un-mount from my PC.

I have tried the same music on the internal memory and it still does not show up.

I have also moved the files around so they sit on the root of both the internal and external memory.

All with no luck. Im wondering if its something to do with the tags - but even if this was true they should show up but with "artist unknown"?

(card is a 16gb Kingston).

Bit of an update - if i use a file explorer on the phone and navigate to the music it will play. But it plays without any tags appearing as "unknown artist".

I've had a look at the tags and they are ID3 v1.x - these should be ok for android shouldn't they?

I've just seen this:

Samsung phones have a problem with corrupt ID3 tags. The phone's media scanner will crash when scan a corrupt file and part or all of your music will not show up in system music player any more. If your music are missing after editing, just find the file you edited and delete it. The bug doesn't exist on motorola and htc phones. And this app also has no problem with corrupt files. We are doing more tests on more phone models.

Im going to re-edit the tags and see if this helps. Will keep you posted.

The problem with tags is that Android does not recognise ID3 V2.4 tags, yours should be OK but they clearly aren't.

Rather than manually editing, try the excellent and free (not even ad supported) MediaFix which will fix all your tags with a couple of clicks - it's great.

Hi Lotus, yep I tried media fix and it didn't work. Re-tagging the files didn't work either.

Im at a loss as to what to do next.

Unfortunately, I am running short of ideas too.

My only remaining suggestion is to get a few random files in different formats eg mp3, m4a (AAC) etc and see if it's a generic problem affecting all your music.

BTW, does media scanner find videos OK?

Solution: it wasn't the tags in the end but the title field of each song. The source of my downloads had prefixed each song title with a full stop i.e " .makeyoufeelmylove.mp3 " and this was making the phone not detect it as an mp3 for some reason.

Weird one that. Hope this helps someone in future as this is 2 hours of my life i'll never get back.

It's weird that it happened but not weird that the OS didn't register those as music.

All versions of Unix (which includes Linux and therefore Android) treat files that start with a full stop as being hidden files, normally configuration files. It would therefore make perfect sense that the OS would ignore these files.

I'm glad you got it sorted.

I've always know i should of learnt more about Linux. Using ubuntu occasionally is the extent of my knowledge. Thanks for the tip it all makes sense now.

I've got this same problem, tried putting the music in different places, its all MP3 some comes up unknown, formatting the cd-card and the internal memory makes no difference. Tried transfering on explorer and WMP syncing nothing seems to make it see the music. I only get about 15-20% recognised

I was wondering it Itunes (I previously had a iphone) had changed the way thing were tagged.

I don't seem to beable to find out the prefix bit that your talking about above see if its different. I've checked 2 albums I know work and don't work and can't see any different in the file ext, name, properties etc

Any place I should be looking? My files are labeled as say 07 Girl from Mars.mp3 all of the my files seem to be arranged that way so I don't understand
