Root Flash SuperUser instead of ROM?

Hello all,

I'm on my 4th replacement Evo V (yeah, getting a bit sick of it). And the first step I always take is to root. I'm following one of the guides as always, but have run into a snag.

The "Newbie" guide I'm following links to a rooted stock ROM that is no longer available. Someone has listed an alternative in the thread, but the download keeps failing partway through.

But what it comes down to, is do I need to install a full ROM? Can't I just flash a Superuser.zip once I have it unlocked and a custom recovery flashed? If so, do you have a link to the Superuser.zip I could use for the Evo V?

I'm not interested in custom ROMs or getting S-OFF, btw, just rooted.

Thanks.

Once you have the phone rooted (su installed in /system/bin) all you have to do is install SuperSU from the Play store. You don't need a custom recovery unless you want one. It's not the recovery or the ROM that causes the phone to be rooted, it's the existence of su (and a way of accessing it, like SuperSU) that does.

Hmm, okay maybe I'm confused. I thought SuperSU was what installed SU?

Maybe I could ask it another way. I've done the HTCdev unlock. I've installed TWRP recovery. The next step on the guide is to flash the rooted stock ROM. But I'd rather skip that and just root my device another way. Is there a way to do that?

Thanks for your help.

edit:

I found a superuser.zip here that looks like it will work:

Although now that I'm looking at Harmonia, I may just try that out instead. :)
