Root Flashing custom kernel

Ok so im running Miui XJ and my battery isn't lasting as long as i would like it to and occasionly my phone lags rather badly whether it be while playing a game, or looking on internet or even on the home screens and folders of Go Launcher.

So ive been reading up about flashing a custom kernel. Ive seen that ManU kernel is popular but i have no idea which version or type i need to flash. Also after flashing a kernel, what would be the next steps to see a difference in my battery life?

I'd suggest either 2.1 or one of the 1.4 Gingerbread versions (2.1 is GB only). I generally use HAVS-AXI-128-CFS version.

After flashing the simplest thing you can do is to use SetCPU to adjust the frequency ranges to taste. More complex is to tweak the voltage ranges the kernel uses. There's discussion of this in the ManU thread at XDA, and I'm sure a few threads round here (the dGB thread is bound to have it somewhere). Be careful doing this though, since different handsets have different tolerances - don't try until you are comfortable with what you have to do. I'd suggest using the kernel defaults for a few days before playing with this.

Remember that kernel tweaking makes more difference to standby times than screen-on usage, so if you use it heavily don't expect miracles.

Always take a nandroid before flashing anything, though problems flashing a kernel (as long as compatible with ROM) are rare.

Yes, flash from recovery.

if using SetCPU you should probably not check Set at boot, especially if you're messing about with Voltages.

ok so ive gone for these. Have I done it right? Should I go higher/lower with any?

Not sure if this is the cause, but yesterday i was playing a game, it froze and the phone rebooted itself. Just now going into whatsapp it froze and rebooted again. Also some apps have been freezing and force closing. Any ideas?

Hmm, shouldn't be a problem. Of course not all phones play well with HAVS kernels, but the 2.1 kernel uses slightly higher default voltages, so is usually OK.

I'd do the "device selection" thing in SetCPU, just to be sure. Then if it persists we may have to look at a different kernel version.
