Flashing, firmware, baseband, help?

What we're tlaking about is under the battery usage statistics, the signal bars are grey no matter what (with the exception of themed roms)

Atleast i'm pretty sure you're talking about the bars you see in the notification area?

If your solution to the problem is the same as mine, it's easier to flash a different modem than returning this glorious piece of hardware ;)

Wait what is this? Can you give me a screenshot?

Yeah Im talking about the signal bars in the notification area, they are all gray and not green, are yours?

What specifically are you talking about under battery stats?

From the homescreen you press Menu -> Settings -> About phone -> Battery Usage

There in the top, in the bottom section is a text called 'Phone Signal' the colour of that shows how good the signal strength is, i found somewhere where they explained the various colours, black is either no signal or airplane mode, grey is bad signal, brown (which i got) is okay, and green is excellent, and since i live right across the street from a mobile tower i should really be in green constantly

No no I know what you mean. Im curious as to what you're talking about with regards to the color.

Can you post me a screenshot? From your phone hold down the home button and the power button. Voila screenshot!

Then you can upload it somewhere and post a link here.

Cheers. :)

This is not from my phone, but almost no difference between this and mine, except i don't have wifi turned on

Phone signal colour is the exact same though, how he got that battery life i'd love to know!

Thanks for that pic. Yeah my phone signal is yellow too (some green but not enough for my liking).

Im heading to T-Mobile tonight after work in search of a better signal. If not, will be getting rid of this phone.

Android OS seems to be hogging the most of my battery as well. Maybe I will factory reset, not sure.

Still would like to root and rom this bad boy though. Especially if I end up having to let it go. :(

I still think swapping out the phone is a bit drastic.. if you're gonna root it anyway, then fimnding the right baseband for your location is gonna do the trick, right ?

Maybe. But Im also using a phone in the US meant for Europe etc. I still have VZW and my Droid X. So if this does not work, may ditch the phone and wait to see what comes out in the coming months here in the states you know?

I think you're wrong about that.. this is not meant to sound like the typical euro-against-america persona, but here goes :P

We got it first, but i think they've made it to be used everywhere, look at Hesh living in vietnam with a phone that had firmware from Romania, that he bought in canada, or something along those lines, it would be a smart move from samsungs side to just make one type of handset that works worldwide, instead of the cdma/gsm differences, basically it's just a shell.

Maybe if you got access to write on that firmware thread over on the xda forums someone could advise you on which baseband to flash and use to give you better signal strength.

I may have turned into a samsung fanboy quite fast :P

yeah, the notification bar signal icon is grey, but there are two kinds of grey, if u get all 4 dark grey, it means ur out of signal, the light grey shows how strong it is.. but yeah a more useful way to see its affect on the battery is by going thru the battery usage graph

sid, how did the signal improve? did u flash a new modem?

EDIT: wat just happened, looks like i missed about 10 new posts.. lol. sorry if the above is a bit outdated :D

Cell reception with my phone has been better with the SG2 than my samsung focus (WP7), so i think its location more than phone.

Yes you can flash modems without CSC or Firmware.
Here are some but it looks like it only goes up to KG3
Galaxy S 2 Shipped Modem Collection - xda-developers

Thanks mate, i found my way to that exact same thread, problem is pulsar relates it to villainrom releases, and before i updated the first go around with kies i can't remember what modem it had - should've written it down, but i did a firmware recovery-thingy in kies so figured i _may_ be able to see the backup it made there in order to find that specific modem (which seemed to work best) from there work my way up the list...

any clues? anyone ?

TL;DR, how do i figure out the pda/phone/csc from my backup in Kies ?

sorry for the misleading info earlier, sid.. my phone signal is also yellow. i dont know wat made me say it was green, maybe i went colorblind for a day :D anyway, i dont think ur modem is the issue.. my entire bar is yellow for phone signal

check out steslatt's battery tips thread, try that out instead.. signing out of latitude and disabling some autorun apps etc has helped better it even more.. for the first time today, imade it 24 hours without charge, inclding an hour of music and another hour of gaming, plus the usual email n stuff... n ive still got 20%. that battery stats app really helps u cut down stuff u dont need. hope that helps!

Yeah i had my finger pointed at latitude as one of the reasons, i started using it somewhere around when i updated to xwkf3 firmware, but the battery drain wasn't noticable, as i charge it every night anyway, atleast it could go more than 7-9 hours, so latitude helps, but isn't the main problem i have, reading through the xda forums about modems for the SGS2, i've seen others report newer or older modems having various impact on both signal strength and connectivity, and battery drain... some people report certain carrier and modem mix as being good, for me it appears to be a trial and error thing, unless i can find out what modem i had before i even updated it officially through kies.

Good link though, thanks :)

The villain rom modems are stock modems so they would be ok but like I said it only goes up to KG3. I did find a full list once before but cant seem to find it now. I will have another look today. Can you remember what firmware you was on? when you did a backup?

EDIT - Found it http://obihoernchen.androidcodex.com/downloads/index.php?dir=SGS2+Modems/

No i can't :/ but now i'm trying out KG2.. see if i can push beyond 9 hours (it easily went twice as much before i ever updated)

A found a .sbu file in my kies folder somewhere that holds the backup, but it's only Kies that can read it, and i'm not suer how i'd go about taking that file apart to see what my modem/firmware and other stuff was before then.

I thinik it might've been kdj, k4, or ke7 though.. so far i've noticed with kg2 that my android os bug is back >.<

You should have flashed KG5 sid.

On another note, I am sending this phone back. It was short lived and nice while I had it, but network issues where I live were just not worth it. I even tried T-Mobile (what a waste of time and money).

Good luck to all you guys and thanks for your help and support.

Cheers.

I did, it was part of the firmware package i flashed in the first go ;)

Didn't quite work out though, now i'm on KDJ modem, and it seems to work much better

Awesome glad to hear it. :D

So far.. it seemed to take a few days for the signal strength to kick in with a bright green colour :D though i'm sad you gave up on the phone :/ What did you replace it with ? please don't give me a reason to iMurder you *Wink*

If you press *#1234# in your dialer it will give you your CSC version there. Then you could match it up to one in the XDA thread.

EDIT: I just checked mine and its OXAKG6 and it works fine for me :)

Is it rely required to match csc?
wen i dialled *#1234# my csc of froyo is CSC_S5570OJPKA3
but i would like to upgrade it to gingerbread which has CSC_S5570OJPKA4
Should this rely match b4 flashing?

Is there someplace here I can learn about what the rooting & flashing provides for the end user?

Just got an S2 here en Suisse, very happy with it but curious about these threads on modding

Glad that it worked out for you sid. :)

I had to give up on the phone due to carrier issues here in the US. Sad really but there were just a few things that I did not like. Like bluetooth for example.

I have no replacement as of yet, still using my Droid X. :D
