Root flashing roms rezound

Hey Scotty - I just rooted my Rezound, thanks to your guide, and now I'm looking to flash A ported version of CM10.1 from XDA. I know my firmware needs to be updated as I'm a couple versions behind in HBOOT, but my question to you is, can I still flash this ROM using your instructions in your S-On rom flashing thread, or would I have to Permanently flash the recovery the creator recommends?

Would there be any advantages to keeping the stock recovery now that we're pretty sure Verizon's not going to push out any more major updates?

yes,you can flash any rom set up for s-off flashing by fastboot booting the recovery, including wildstang's cm10.1. you definately do not need to permantly install the recovery he recomends,or any custom recovery for that matter. twrp is a nice recovery, but i still use amon on my rezound, and it will install cm10 just fine. if youd like to try out twrp, you can... you can boot it in the same manner as the s on rom flashing thread describes.

even the original droid incredible is still getting updates now and then ;) there may not be any major ones any time soon, but you cant rule out maintenance updates. having said that, you can only accept them if youre on the stock rom,and it is still stock. if youve modified it anyway, its a good possibility an OTA will fail anyway.

if you want to run custom roms,or even heavily modded stock roms, there is no advantage to keeping the stock recovery in place. you can go ahead and install a permanent recovcery if you wish- while it cannot install kernels while s on,it may still be of some use in installing other files, making a backup on the go,or even restoring a backup,as long as the backup in question is compatible with the kernel on the phone.

if youre on ICS firmware, the updating is prolly not that big a deal. the rom should boot on any of the ICS firmware. the newer firmware may be more efficient, but its a bit more of a pain to install s on. if you wish to install the firmeare, youll either need to flash a signed firmware package from an OTA,or youll need to run a full RUU. in either case, youll need to relock the bootloader prior, and be aware its forever,as you cannot go backwards while s on.

i personally run wildstang's rom with the global firmware, and have good luck with it.

just holler if you have further questions :)

I noticed one thing while I was reading over the notes for wildstang's rom, these are the recommended HBOOT and radio versions:
RADIO: 2.22.10.0801r, 2.22.10.0803r
HBOOT: 2.27

And I know you said my HBOOT version didn't matter all that much, since I'm on the ICS firmware, but my radio is one full version behind...I copied my information from the fastboot screen as pasted below:
***TAMPERED***
***UNLOCKED***
VIGOR PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.25.0000
RADIO-1.22.10.0421r/1.22.10.0424r
OpenDSP-v13.6.0.7611.00.0104
eMMC-boot

The recommended firmware is from the global update. You should be fine with what you have... That firmware is from the most current release.

Personaly, I would flash with what you have. If you have issues you can always update the firmware later. As I mentioned, once you update, you cannot go back

OK man, thanks. I just wanted to make sure that wouldn't be a problem since it seemed like I was pretty far behind.

I installed this ROM yesterday and I'm not to sure about it. YouTube app is un-watchable. I think I'll roll back to ICS and hope for a more stable ROM in a few weeks.

stang puts out a new version every 4 days :) there are a few other AOSP based rims that you could try as well.

you tube is a little glitchy for me,but defiantely not unwatchable. did you do a full wipe? restore something other than user apps with titanium?

So I cannot for the life of me get adb to recognize my device since flashing stang's cm10.1 rom. It always says the device is offline and I can't issue commands.

I enabled USB debugging in dev settings, and allowed Apps and ADB to root access - also in dev settings. What have I got wrong?

Flash TRWP. It's easier to get my phone into fastboot via the adb commands than it is to use the physical buttons (my power button's always been a bit wonky). And I wouldn't know how to flash it without my pc.

Ahhh. If you just need to get to bootloader or recovery, try an app called "quickboot"

Once you've used quickboot to get to fastboot, simply plug in the phone and flash twrp like you normally would :)

You can also enable the extended power menu,as described in the Rom thread. There are a couple ways to skin the cat :)

yup! should work just fine. just use the menu option to reboot to bootloader in place of "adb reboot bootloader" :D

OK, another question, since you're running this rom...Do you have troubles with 4G and WIFI not working properly? Everything worked properly for a couple days, then for seemingly no reason, my 4G refused to toggle on. I did a factory reset and it fixed it, then last night wifi broke. I haven't tried it on another network yet, but I get stuck on obtaining IP address on my home network. I know it works, since I'm posting on it right now.

a couple of times ive had data stop working all together, but a simple airplane mode toggle fixed it for me.

usually a reboot,or toggling airplane mode on,then off will fix data issues. you can never rule out the possibility of vzw having trouble in your area as well :)

Yeah, I usually have pretty good 4G service in my area. I did a couple airplane mode toggles like you suggested and the wifi eventually fixed itself. I thought I remembered stang suggesting doing that in the original ROM description, but I can't find it in the OP now. It may have been another rom...I was looking at a lot of them at the time.
