Root Flashing with a plain vanilla 2.1 or 2.2 ROM.

I've been trying out a number of different custom ROM's over the last few months but would just like to "upgrade" my phone to a plain vanilla version of the Android 2.1. or 2.2 ROM.
The standard ROM on the phone is 1.5.1 and the OTA upgrade never happened so i guess I need to do it manually.
Has anyone tried this or want to share any tips on this?

There are a few AOSP (vanilla) roms available (2.2). FroydVillain is one of them.

Cyanogen is about as 'vanilla' as 2.2 roms are going to come. And most other 2.2 roms are based on that.

Are you using a sprint or a gsm hero, by the way?
