Samsung Invents 16MP Camera Sensor for Smartphones, Tablets, Cameras - X-bit labs
Nokia's N8 was 8MP with a Zeiss lens. Since Samsung makes cameras from point and shoots to DSLRs, I was surprised at some of the poor quality on some phones. And no flash. My 5MP Nokia C6 camera had far better clarity and controls and a flash, over the 5MP SGS4G.

Maybe the next generation of phone cameras will be better. Although unless they improve the noise algorithm, 16MP on a tiny chip might be noisy.

While phone cams are getting better they have a long way before they meet the quality of even a decent P&S. I wish the MP race would stop. I haven't checked to see what the sensor size is in a phone cam but it must be extremely small. I've been into digital photography for over a decade and even the dSLRs have too many MP. Most dSLRs have an APS-C sized sensor. 6 to 8MP can make an amazing 13x18 print ...and how often do you make those? ;) Sure, cropping a 12+ MP image has benefits but I prefer to use a zoom or if using a prime lens, zoom with my feet :) Ah, give me a fast f/1.4 35mm lens and I'd be happy shooting anything.

Unfortunately, pixels are all the public seem to understand. They just think the more the better. I just got a Canon SX30 for the revolving moving viewer on the back.

You would think a camera like that would also shoot RAW. I've gotta download and save as DNG. Also, if that's a state of the art electronic viewfinder, it's too damn slow.

I think the cell phone switches view is faster if you can see the display. I use the cell if I want to send the pic. Far easier than using the 20D and having to download and edit just for a quick shot. I'd never print the cell's photos. I'll edit the DSLR and SX30 for that.

I've only got a prime 60mm Macro. The rest are zoom. Tamron and Canon.
While not looking for photo quality, I do like to take pics of birds at a distance just to identify.
Since I can't carry much, I'm limited to a 500mm catadioptric mirror lens. No AF and soft, but PS does wonders.

Same thing goes for lawn tractors. "More" hp is not necessarily better. Old Cub Cadets still still running had 8-12 hp and could till ground up more than effectively. Today's 22-24 hp models barely have the torque to do any ground engagement at all.
But, with that said my Droid X takes plenty good enough pictures for my liking. And being able to send pics to websites WITHOUT having to connect a cable to a computer is infinitely better!
Video quality is outstanding. "8mp"; 720p. Yes, the pics do lack "saturation".
