Forcing Apps to install to the SD Card without root

Yeah, the pre installed apps sit on the system partition and without root, they're unmovable unfortunately.

That's a shame. Some replies on this thread said they had been able to move Facebook etc. It's a pity this phone is so flawed as it's a great piece of hardware - good quality camera with flash, brilliant music player. I love it's compact size.

I don't like the Desire C - slightly bigger and no flash for the camera.

Hi - Thanks to El Pres for this tip, which finally gave me a decent amount of memory back. When I ran it as per instructions it worked fine . . .

Except that (as said above) some of the 'pre-installed' stuff still won't move; in my case the main culprit being 'Maps' which uses more memory than any other app. Ah well.

The other problem I found was that - having moved what I could - 'BBC News' (moved to the SD Card) wouldn't update any more, and 'Juice Defender' failed to load itself. When I restored 'BBC News' to the phone memory, both it and 'Juice Defender' worked properly again.

Any comments from anyone?I still have a better memory situation than before, so I am mostly happy.

Hi!
Thanks for a good guide.

My problem is that I cannot install system updates anymore. There is always one available but it won't install because of modified programs it say.

I tried factory reset and changing my SD card, but it didn't work. Everything is wiped but the phone will not let me install updated.

I also tried to reverse the process and setInstallLocation to 1 again, but that didn't work either.

Any suggestions?

This didn't work on my HTC Wildfire S.
I could see my device attached,
All the DOS commands 'worked',

But after I did 'exit' and unplugged my phone, it was all exactly the same and still does not have the option to move certain apps to the SD card...

How come it works for other people??????

Hi Dave, what apps can't you move to the SD Card?

Hi. Very new to the forum. Love the posts. However, I am getting something that I have not seen addressed. When I download the sdk-tools (whether the full version or the mini), when I try to unzip the folder to extract the programs, it tells me that I need a password. What do I do from there?

Thank you soo much! Though can't seem to move either the gmail app or the Facebook for HTC app to sd card, even though I've deleted their widgets. Any ideas why?

They're system apps and installed on a different part of the phones internals; they can't be moved without root unfortunately. :(

Mr President: I am new to this forum.

My problem is: I already could move some applications installed on my phone HTC Wildfire S which is running on Android to the Phone. However, many applications don't have the option "move to SD" active but greyed out.

I am wondering if your solution would enable move all the applications which are showing grey display too ? Why this question arised for me is because, I saw your statement of caution saying, some applications cannot be moved. I also have a understanding that, only those applications that need various permissions, cannot be moved to SD card.

So, my question is, if I follow your app all my apps I can move and further all apps I download would directly be installed on SD card by default ? Or is your solution only for people who cannot move any application to SD card, unlike in my case, where I can send few applications to SD Card already.

Please tell me, so that I will go-ahead and try your solution. However, when I already tried your steps, I got stuck in 2nd command. Firstly, it didn't showed me the devices attached. Don't know whats the problem. After reading some posts, I reckon, it is due to HTC Sync unavailability. I am downloading htc_sync_setup_3.3.21. Hope it supports HTC Wildfire S :S

And, another general question. I have 2GB card. Can I purchase some 8GB card or so for my handset ? If so, how can I transfer my data from this 2GB to 8GB ? I do have 9 in 1 card reader in my Dell Laptop, however, this 2GB card couldn't be inserted in any slot :( lol Could you help me please ?

You can't move any of the pre installed apps to your SD Card either, so stuff like Facebook, Gmail etc. That has to stay on the phones memory.

You can't move any app that has an active widget and some apps just won't move (it's the way the dev made them).

See above. A lot depends on the dev too, whether he or she has made the app SD Card Installable.

Yeah, I think all versions of HTC Sync are compatible with all HTC Phones? If you head to the official Wildfire S page on the HTC site, that will set you on the right track.

8GB should work. If you want to copy stuff over, just copy it to your PC, then transfer copy back across to your new SD Card. If you get HTC Sync working, it's easy enough to do whilst the card is in the phone.

Ok Mr President, thank you for the welcome message and your quick reply.

Well, I am happy to say that, I have installed HTC Sync and could perfrom the steps you told successfully. However, I could able to push only one more app that was earlier immovable to the SD card now.

And I am confused with memory things. The phone memory shows, 134 MB used now and only 16 MB free lol. Does it mean my HTC Wildfire S memory is only 150 MB >

Also, as you rightly said, I couldn't move pre-installed apps. And, some other apps I couldn't move.

Could you please explain me the following:

1. How the apps that I installed on phone moves to SD card and runs automatically if I move it to SD card. I mean, what I am trying to understand is, does it included uninstalling from phone, installing in SD card behind the scenes ? I am not able to understand, just for my curiosity.

2. I did install sync, but I don't know how to copy everything from phone (Contact numbers, pic, and other miscellaneous) to computer. As because, when I try to connect to Lappy, it says, HTC sync couldn't be recognized on computer :(

3. I hate ****Book lol, I am just an Orkut fan for many of the reasons, although I no more use it. So is there any option for me to delete my FB app from my HTC ? I don't see any option to delete.

Thank you for guiding me.

Ok Mr President. On researching stuffs myself, I got some learning myself on Sync. I made the sync to work now. However, I don't see it to be useful lol because still I am not sure how to sync contact numbers alone from Mobile to PC. So that, even if I lose this contact numbers by losing the phone, I have some backup. Well if you have any directions for this, please let me know.

Also, it will be great if you can help me with my questions 1 and 3 at your convenience.

Thank you for the care.
