Help Forcing APT-X

Asterra

Newbie
I seem to recall looking around for hard data on this issue back at around xmas, but ultimately deciding that the Note 2 was just too new for people to really have solid answers.

Now it's February. Time to pin this one down.

I stream music to my car (2012 Civic) using HandsFreeLink. This works, although there are issues which I will delve into in a separate thread. However, it is painfully obvious that the stream is defaulting to the SBC codec, which provides sub-MP3 quality, similar to MP2 or MiniDisc if anyone has ever heard those.

The problem here is lack of transparency. There does not seem to be a way for me to force the phone to tell me what it is doing, and/or force a change in what it is doing - specifically, force it to use Apt-X or whatever I happen to want it to use. The solution I am hoping for is an app or some other means of enabling this functionality which I'd like to think I should have been able to take for granted. Sort of like how there is an app to force ringtones to play at 100% volume from beginning to end, overriding the phone's normal (and frankly dumb) behavior of initially playing them quiet.

I mean, Samsung goes out of their way to list Apt-X (as part of Bluetooth 4.0) as a feature. It seems to me that there must be some way for the user to forcibly enable said feature.

So where do we stand on this, now that the phone is about a third the way into its lifespan with the Note 3 officially looming on the horizon?

Pretty much spot-on what I expected.

As far as I am concerned, the Note 2 does not in fact have Bluetooth 4.0 and does not support Apt-X. It provides no means of informing the user what codec it's using, and no means of modifying said codec. It defaults to SBC. There is no difference between this state of affairs and a missing feature. The phone should not be advertised as boasting Apt-X.
