Format SD with 2.1.1 install?

Just completed my first root of my Hero, and plan to install Fresh2.1.1, but I am unclear on the matter of apps2sd being built into it (is it?) and whether I need to back up my entire 16g sd card before I load 2.1.1.
I can live with not using apps2sd if it means I don't need to re-copy my entire sd card which is near full.

If I'm not mistaken, it shouldn't format your card if you've already formatted it to the correct structure for apps2sd to work.

In other words, if you've used apps2sd before with that card, it should not format your card.

Never had apps2sd before...
I do have my original sd card that came with the phone. Is the formatting necessary, or can I install 2.1.1 from the old card and then swap back?

it's not necessary at all.. you don't have to use apps2sd and with 2.1.1 there's a ton of free space internally.. you can even leave your 16gb card in as it won't hurt it at all
