We all have N7's. Love 'em. My mom's has been having severe charging trouble for months now, however. Using various power usage apps, I determined it must be a hardware issue, but mom desperate for resolution was going to have me try a full device re-flash with current factory firmware.
The "D'oh!" moment happened when she went to plug in to the PC to get her pictures off. First try, and Windows gave an unrecognized USB message. Second try yielded zero response from the computer, although the tablet acknowledged it was taking a charge. I tried to connect it to my computer to back up for her, but again no response. So sure enough, I thought, it had a bad USB port.
I began disassembly to swap in another USB port from a parts N7, and after pulling the speakers out (which cover the USB port) I was shocked at what I saw.
The clip that secures the data ribbon was dislodged, and flipped to an entirely open position. The cable was simply sitting loosely in the connector. All I did was clip it back down, securely, and her tablet is working fine now. It charged from 80-100% in about 20 minutes, reports that it is on AC instead of USB again, and is recognized by Windows without error.
See attached image for the clip in question, it should be securely clipped down like in the pic.
