Help FoxFi (hotspot usage)

So after updating to jelly bean, one of the first things I noticed is that every time I turn on my foxfi it now triggers sprint mobile hotspot to on automatically. This makes me a bit afraid of using it. So, my questions:
1. There is no data fees warnings or anything when sprint mobile hotspot switches to on. Does that mean that it doesn't cost money or does it mean sprint is a sneaky little bastard?
2. If I turn off sprint mobile hotspot right after it turns itself on but leave foxfi on would I be safe?
3. If foxfi simply doesn't work anymore, what are my alternatives other than rooting?

I'm on my way to a getaway trip so hopefully one of you kind folks has some kinda answer before we arrive at the hotel. Thanks .

If you would have gone to the FoxFi website, you would see this information: FoxFi Devices

Sometimes, when you check the app first, you can answer your own questions. :)
 
i also posted this in the JB thread. a member stated they were able to still use foxfi so why not send them a PM and ask what they are doing differently...

Agree, your only recourse is to root, or head to xda and find ICS or pay for the hot spot feature.. :p

Download the latest version from the Foxfi site. Running fine on my recently updated Evo LTE with JB.

That was me.... I stand corrected. It loads fine. I get no error but it never passes a usable IP to the connected device so no internet at the moment. I did however send the Foxfi folks a question regarding when they will be fixing the JB issue on our phones and have still yet to hear back. Sorry for the confusion.
 
It's an issue with jellybean in general and it's not specific to any devices. I'm not aware of any tethering that works on stock rooted or unrooted jellybean

Im fairly certain that aosp roms like cm10 can still tether(I haven't ran one for a long time though, I need to update my sig) , so I'm not sure exactly where to pin the fix down.

I just know my family's s3 on jb can't do it and foxfi doesn't support any 4.1+ device at this time.
 
I took the latest foxfi update and it broke the unlimited teather ability in the app. Which, btw, worked flawlessly before the update. You can only get a limited number of minutes and then it shuts off. You need to pay for the app to get continuous connectivity now. :mad:

I can confirm this app worked great on stock ICS before I rooted and such. :o
 
yes that too was posted on their apps page.. foxfi has been the best tethering app for stock users who choose not to root. i hope they fix it before us old school ICS'ers have to move to JB...

Any way to get internet from non-root phone ?

Used Foxfi, until phone replaced last month, and came with new operating system (See signature).

Is there any way to get internet from phone to computer w/o rooting.

Cable, Bluetooth, anything ?

in short, no.

FoxFi w/pdanet was about the only way to use the hotspot function from the phone without going to root. you may try to revert to the previous android system version, but this too requires root.

Sprint patched this issue so now its more of a challenge to use that program in stock form.

please understand the tethering function for carrier locked phones is a pay service, not free so one should expect this to eventually be patched so the end user would have to use the carriers' paid tethering service. ;).

in this instance, rooting is what many people do to get around this (and to add or subtract certain things as they see fit). one is very limited when stock. ;)
 
Is easy tether still working? I used that over USB before my EVO was rooted, but I have no way to test non-rooted now. I paid 10.00 bucks for it but it was worth it.
 
PDANet works great with a USB cable. When connected it will also use your computers WIFI to set up a hotspot, so I can use my iPad with it. A very cool program, and because I bought the FoxFi key for $6 bucks and they now own it, the key works with PDANet...

Can you talk a bit more about this? So what you are saying is that you run PDANet on your phone, then use a USB cable to connect to a laptop and give internet to that laptop? Then the laptop can somehow make itself into a wifi hotspot? How does the laptop be able to do this when the laptop is not running PDANet?
 
PDAnet is installed on your phone via a download on your computer. Go to PdaNet and download the Android version. It will instruct you to connect your phone via USB cable and it wil install it on your phone. Once installed and tethered, via usb cable, you can choose wifi share from the options (on PdaNet Desktop) and it will use your laptops wifi as a hotspot for other devices like your tablet... Works great!
Don't forget, it will limit you to 30 mins per session until you buy the key for $6. Well worth it in my opinion......
