so i am looking at doing the wifi tether. is this the way to go: http://www.androlib.com/android.application.net-szym-barnacle-Ajji.aspx ? it will not brick my phone, will it? can anything that i download brick my phone, such as these apps.?

also, is rooting the phone legal, like jailbreaking an iphone is?

It's not illegal to root your phone, no.

As far as Wifi tethering goes, I cannot help you much there except that you are going to drain your battery pretty fast if you use that, so make sure you are plugging it in. I started using EasyTether after reading about it on this website and I really like the program. You install the app to your phone as well as a small application on your computer and when you want to tether you plug the USB into your computer & phone and click connect on the icon in your start bar. Very simple and it charges your phone while you tether! Win-win!
