Quite a few years ago we were hired to play for a wedding between two second generation Polish-Americans, so we learned a half dozen Polkas, 4 American Pop Polkas and 2 Authentic Polish ones. We played 2 Polkas all night and they didn't want any more polkas, they wanted to boogie.
My heritage is 100% Italian (family name was changed to something American sounding) so I'll go with an Italian dance:
Tango
Italian? Many years ago I had a discussion with an avid ballroom dancer who used to come where we play to dance, especially Tango. I told him the music sounded like the old Italian music my grandmother used to play on the phonograph. He said Tango was generally thought of as an Afro-Hispanic dance.
He researched it and found during the exodus from Italy, the southern Italians migrated to New York and spread out while the Northern Italians entered the Americas via Buenos Aires.
They brought the music and dance with them, but accepted the local Afro-Hispanic generic name for dance, "Tango".
So there you have it, Tango is an Italian dance.
I'm a music geek and these things interest me.
