Help freeing up internal memory

I have 233mb of free space. Is that just apps? How do I access the internal drive so I can see what's going on in here?

What exactly do you want to know? Basically, you have 1GB of internal storage, which is partitioned for various parts of the system:

/system - 350 MB - This is where the system files (Android OS itself, etc.) are stored. Generally, a good portion of this goes unused, and you never know. You don't see the free space from this unless you're using an app that specifically shows you free space on each partition. If you're just looking at storage under settings, it will now show you the free space from this. Unless you repartition, this space is basically unusable. Note that with root you *can* write to /system, and put apps directly in /system/app, but you'd need a reason for doing so.

/data - ~430 MB - This is the internal storage that you see and get to use. Again, if you're looking at storage in settings, whatever free space you see is from this partition. This is where all apps/app data is stored.

/cache 160 MB - This is system cache. No, it doesn't need to be that big, but it is what it is. A lot of people choose to move dalvik cache (normally on /data) to this partition to free up usable space. Once again, when you see free space, you're not seeing in on here. It's *generally* unusable (except for moving dalvik cache here, obviously).

If you have root, you *can* repartition, taking as much of the unused space in /system and /cache as possible, and adding it to the /data partition. There are better ways of freeing space on /data imho. In your case, though 233 MB is quite a bit. Unless you plan on installing a whole bunch of apps any time soon, I wouldn't worry about it.

If you want a breakdown of apps and app data used on internal storage (and the sdcard) use this:

OK I didn't realize I was ok on space there. It seemed like so little to me. I tried that diskusage app. Very nice and user friendly. I don't think I do anything out of the ordinary with my internal storage. I'm rooted but I think the only thing going on in there is contacts and apps... rom etc.

If you know of any good threads on effecient managing of the internal storage I might have some questions after a little bit of studying.

I'm not seeing a clear trash option while mounted but I deleted the files from astro in the device.

I'll try out the shift-delete technique next time. I'm using ubuntu 10.04 in case you were wondering.

I don't know of any specific internal storage management threads off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are plenty of them; I'll search for some if you need help. Basically, these are things you can do in terms of internal storage:

1) For apps that support it, move apps to the sdcard via normal froyo apps2sd. You can save at least some internal storage space doing this.

2) Move dalvik cache to either the sdcard or the cache partition. For some unknown reason, dalvik cache resides on /data, taking up a bunch of space that you can actually otherwise use. If you partition your sdcard with an ext partition, you can move dalvik to the sdcard using a2sd. Otherwise, a lot of ROMs have the option to move dalvik cache to the cache partition.

3) Move all apps to the sdcard card using a2sd after partitioning the sdcard. Some people claim this slows apps down a little, but you potentially save a few hundred MB of space. Every time you install an app, internal storage will not be affected. Keep in mind, though, that you won't be leaving much space on the sdcard for things other than apps if you do this and use an 8 GB card.

4) Repartition the existing partitions. Doing this allows you to take the normally unused internal storage under the /system and /cache partitions and add it to the /data partition.

If you combine the above methods, you could easily have 500+ MB of free internal storage, but you have to ask yourself if you really need to. Anything over 200 MB of free internal storage is quite a bit. Like I said earlier, if you intend to install a lot more apps, you might consider one of the above, but it's really not *that* necessary. If you have any more questions, let me know, or I can help you find more threads for anything specific.

Hehe, crossing threads had me confused for a sec. Yeah, it definitely will work if you just delete from the phone. I'm sure there must be an option to clear trash somewhere. Yeah, go ahead and try the shift-delete thing next time.
