Friend can't update his unbranded Desire

A friend of mine got his new Desire today. He bought it from the same place I bought mine a couple of weeks ago. Mine was unlocked, unbranded and I updated on Sunday without any problems. His is showing as running Android 2.1 and the software number is 1.21.405.2, which I believe means that his phone is also unlocked/unbranded (that's what the software number was on my phone before I updated), but when he checks for updates it says that none are available. Anyone got any idea why?

i think htc may have pulled the 2.2 OTA update because people were having problems. its just a rumour though..

Yeah, after starting this thread I found a similar one on XDA Developers where others with unbranded phones can't get the update, so your theory may well be correct. On the other site, someone posted a link to the firmware on HTC's site: -

Is it possible to update with that and if so, how? Do you just unzip all of the files/folders to the root of the microSD card?
