Help Friends can't see my profile pic in messaging

I have been unsuccessful at getting my profile android icon changed to a pic that can be seen by my friends I text message. I would like to have a headshot of me appear on their end when we text back and forth. So far, none of my friends are able to see anything other than the default blank icon.

I have tried the following things:
1. I uploaded a photo to all my linked gmail accts on the computer (3 that are linked to the phone) and then went to menu>accounts and sync and then then hit "sync now" for each acct. Did not result in phone seeing the photo.
2. Created a contact with my own info and photo. This works fine on the computer but I only get the contact info (no headshot) when I look it up on the phone.
3. After reading some of these forum posts, I went to Apps>people>my contact card> edit. Here I am able to insert the wanted photo and it appears in all the right places on my phone but still isn't visible to my texting recipients.

Any suggestions? Thanks so much for any help you can give.

Several of my friends that I text all have pics beside their text messages that I can see on my end. I never uploaded a pic for them or synced facebook so where is it coming from? How is theirs able to auto display on my end but my pic not able to display on their end? Since no one can see my pic, it must be a problem on my end that needs to be fixed.

The pictures on your end can only come from either having a Facebook account linked to your phone or from your gmail contact photos.... The photos aren't really sent "from" them, they are stored locally on your phone.

They would only be able to see a picture of you if they choose one stored on their phone or link a Facebook or gmail contact.
