From 3GS to Note 2

Hello everyone, new to the forums and new to Android.

I bought a 3GS in Aug 09 and still have it to this day. Nothing against Apple, but frankly, Im getting bored of the phone and IOS in general and am planning to get the Note 2 (I live in UK btw).

The 3GS has a 480 by 360 screen, and the Note is a bit higher I hear ? :D

Naturally with such a sharp screen I worry that the Note will eat data like no-ones business. I have only ever used the net on the 3GS so know how long a 500mb cap will last for. I have always wanted to know, does a higher res screen mean that a standard website will use more data to download ? or will it simply reformat to the higher resolution of Note and similar phones without using more data ?

I appreciate this will be the case for text, what about images though ?...If I download a newspaper website on the 3GS and the Note (Note2) will it be approximately the same . I dont want to be downloading too much at a time as I am a very heavy data user.

Other than that , I am pleased that I held off from buying anything for so long as the upgrade to the Note 2 will be quite significant.

It uses notably more, at least for me. I'm on unlimited with Three now, but I started using the Note with my O2 iPhone 4 contract sim, 500mb a month. I never exceeded the 500mb on my 4 just browsing, but doing the same activities on my Note used about 750mb ime.

You'll either download the full webpage or if they have a mobile version you'll download that. Screen resolution has nothing to do with it. You will always download the same no matter what device you use (iPhone, Android phone or Desktop PC) (with the exception of Opera browser which downloads the webpage to their servers, reformats it, then sends it to your phone).

What may use more data is background syncing. This will depend entirely on the apps you install but Android enables apps to keep running in the background so they could still be using data. The benefit of this is you can get notifications when events happen (Facebook for instance).

Yeah. I think the reason it uses more ime doing the same thing is, as you say, background syncing and visiting desktop versions of sites. I used Safari exclusively in the iPhone, getting to the desktop version of sites was a ball ache so I pretty much stuck to the mobile versions.

Thanks for replys everyone. Looking forward to this phone and the Android experience as a whole. Looks so much more interesting to use than IOS and that much more customisable.

You're in for a real treat dude. I came from a 3GS, to an Evo 4G, then Evo 3D then Note LTE and every step I took there was just pure tech joy. Going from the 3GS to the Note 2 is gonna blow your mind.

Wow Apple should be paying you money for having put up with the iPhone 3GS for so long. Anyways, the Note 2 is on my list and I want it bad. It will blow your mind literally coming from an iPhone. Enjoy it.

Still waiting patiently in the UK. My 3GS is on O2 and am due an upgrade so may get some money off the GN2 upon release. Infuriating how little O2 staff know. Releases on the 22nd Oct.

I read a lot about people 'rooting' and using 'custom ROMs' ?..Having an un broken Iphone I am not used to any kind of customisation ...just what is/can a custom ROM do ?

As a side note, (no pun intended :p) can you set a MP3 as a text alert on android / jellybean ?...again, it may sound obvious but been used to a very select number of alerts on the 3GS....thanks

Not only can you set an mp3 as an alert you can also trim it to the exact part of the mp3 that you want played.
3gs to a top end Android LOL, you will be amazed at what you can do now.

Hi everyone, new to the site and android in general. I am making the same jump from 3GS to note 2. Didn't like the look of the four so waited for the five and was disappointed and wanted to try something completely different.
Couldn't get much more different than the note 2 but what the hell. Am going to need quite a lot of advice as am a complete newcomer to android phones but will post my experiences here for any other would be iPhone to note 2 converts.
First thing I've been looking into is how to transfer everything off my iPhone. It seems easy phone sync is the way to go with this although I'm not sure it's preinstalled or free on the note 2. Does anyone have any experience of syncing from iPhone to android and could offer any advice?
Cheers!

Thanks GN2 - was expecting to have to wait another 2 weeks.

When I called Phones 4 U a week ago and they said 'they might be cheaper or more expensive than O2 direct, they cant say' - looks like they are cheaper...will buy today .

I upgraded my daughter's old phone today in CPW to a Note 2 in grey on Orange (EE) - giving her my 3 week old blue SG3.

First impressions?

LOVE IT!

So jealous of you guys in the UK! What do you like most about it or what is the best upgrade/difference over your old S3?

Thanks for the welcome!

I had been a BlackBerry user for a long time and only changed to the S3 a few weeks ago having had the opportunity to try a friend's for a few hours. As such I was only getting to grips with losing my tactile keyboard whilst reading about what the S3 could do which brought the N2 to my attention.

Clearly the size, as well as the s pen are the obvious differences between the two. Its only 6 hours since I unboxed mine so really too early to give anything definite yet.

Oh there is one thing. Battery life is impressing me. It started around 50%, hasn't been charged whilst I have been setting things up, following some reviews such as the one I saw on phonedog, playing vidoe & music, testing out the s pen and is still a very healthy 25%

I'm on call at work in a few hours and praying that I dont get called which means I get time to get more familiar with my new toy :)

Finally got it yesterday ! - is SUPERB - I really cannot fathom a better phone, eye popping colours , particularly as I have never really seen a OLED screen upclose before. An embarrasment of riches that really stuns me at the momet.

I picked up my 3GS after an hour or 2 on the note and felt very odd, as I was 8 ft tall and my hands had grown accordingly, it felt an absolute toy. NOTHING compensates for screen real estate. Watching videos on it is truly like a portable cinema - why would you need 1080p ?...its extremely clear with white whites and no pentile 'fabric' pattern that is slightly evident on the Note.

I am exrapolating my net usage/ camera etc and think I will get 6 hours of on-screen time, thats with 50% brightness and wifi. Do new battery's 'improve' after a few charges ?

Extremely happy with it , Samsungs momentum is building, the more people that see the Note, the fewer will buy Apple, I am sure of it.

The options are initially slightly overwhelming, but thats a good thing !, its great to be able to see a histogram of battery usage, its slightly nerdy but very interesting.

The Note 3 will have to be pretty special !:)

1) Size of screen.
2) Better battery life.
3) Jellybean
4) Appears to have better 3G reception.
5) S-Pen
6) WOW factor.
