Root From CM7 to CM10

Last year I went from stock Nook Color to CM7 (cm-7.2.0-encore.zip & gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip)

Today I decided to try CM10 (cm-10-20130421-NIGHTLY-encore.zip & gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip)

I copied everything from my micro sd card to my computer, cleaned the card using DISKPART, wrote 1gb_clockwork-3.2.0.1-eyeballer.img to the card using Win32DiskImager (this is the same file I used a year ago for CM7). Then I dragged the CM10 file and gapps file to my card, ejected it, popped it into my Nook, and powered it up.

I installed CM10 and then I installed gapps. I went to "Advanced –> Wipe Dalvik cache" then I popped out the micro sd card and rebooted.

I reformatted my micro sd card, dragged all of my old files back onto it, turned the nook off and inserted the card.

Everything seems to be working fine.

So my questrions are these: Is it really this easy? Was I supposed to wipe out the old before installing the new? Did I skip a step that will haunt me later?

Thanks,
Peter

I see a few unnecessary steps.

Win32diskimager doesn't care what state the sdcard is before flashing so you don't need to do diskpart first.

Also, if you hadn't wiped dalvik cache prior to your first boot, you would have had issues so doubt you needed to wipe it after flashing everything. (I'm suggesting you already wiped it when you installed it.) You had to reinstall your apps after updating? If so, that mean your data partition was also wiped.

To update CM7/9 to CM10, I've had the best luck when wiping everything (data, both caches) and doing a clean install. Not sure you needed to wipe the sdcard, but you probably got rid of a little bloat.

If it's working good for you now, I don't see any problem.

Thanks Colchiro!

I used diskpart to clean the card because Win32DiskImager kept giving me an error when I tried to write. After cleaning the card, it worked perfectly.

So if I continue to have no issues, I can just repeat these steps (minus wiping the dalvik cache) when I decide to upgrade to CM10.1, right?

For CM10 to CM10.1 you might be able to upgrade via recovery without having to reinstall everything (aka a "dirty" flash). To do that you copy it to your sdcard and flash from recovery after wiping both cache and Dalvik cache). Of course you'd want to create a recovery backup first, in case it doesn't work.

Best to see if others are upgrading that way without issue.

Soooo, how's CM10 compared to CM7 performance-wise? :D

I gave up on the NC years ago.... just to darn slow.

CM10 has some nice features, and I've noticed that some of the apps work better now. CM10 definitely has better response time.

Hardware too limited for CM10 IMO. Not enough ram and cpu for starts.

Last time I tried it on my wife's dusty old NC was about 6 months ago.

OTOH, CM10.1 works great on my Nexus 7 and HP Touchpad.

colchiro, figures you would be prominent in this thread.:smokingsomb:

These are the steps I followed last evening to go from CM7 to CM10.1.2 (stable). Might help someone else. Hope I didn't miss anything.

On the NC, downloaded CM10.1.2 to the SD card. cm-10.1.2-encore.zip
CyanogenMod Downloads

On the NC, downloaded the corresponding GAPPS (20130812).
Gapps - CyanogenMod

Long press power-button. Reboot into Recovery
Select wipe cache/factory reset
Reboot

Long press power-button. Reboot into Recovery
Select install zip from SD card, and navigate to download directory.
Choose the CM10.1.2 zip file.
Following install, reboot.

Allow to boot all the way up.
Perform another Reboot, pressing "N" button to enter EMMC Recovery
Select install zip from sd card, and navigate to download directory.
Choose the GAPPs zip file.
Following install, reboot.

Configure the device.

The unit may have been slightly more responsive w/CM7 in some places, but YouTube for example, wouldn't play a lot of videos without playing trickery anymore. The experience on the Nook Color is still quite good, although not as great as the HP TouchPad.

A good exercise.

YMMV.

Years ago, I picked up 2 TP's to replace our NC's, which I had no problem doing. They're still pretty darn fast. I finally replaced my wife's NC with a Nexus 7 about 6 months ago. She still liked it b/c it was her first tablet, not because it was fast, light or anything else that counts. I don't even know what happened to her NC. It must be here somewhere, but no-one cares. Glad you still like yours.

Well it's the kids. They *LOVE* using my TP, but when they can't have that, the NC provides a good enough experience.

My son was like, Dad, what did you do, put your TP on my NC? This is awesome.

Well, I'm looking like a star for a few days, until be re-configures it to the point it can't be used easily again. :smokingsomb:

stef7- Tried your instructions, but I can't reboot into recovery. Keep getting this message: "Install Failed - Press power OFF and back ON to try again. If you continue to have issues please contact customer support or visit www.nookcolor.com/support"

Thoughts?

Wilkll, I think you need to be rooted or have already installed a custom rom.

Are you still running the stock rom?

My NC was rooted a while back with CM7. I wanted to try updating it before I made my decision to buy a new one (Nexus, HP, etc.)

If you can't boot into recovery by holding down the "n" button, or from the power button menu, there's a bunch of shortcut apps that will put a shortcut to recovery on your desktop.

O/W install Goo Manager from Play Store and let it boot into recovery and if you don't have one installed (which sounds far-fetched), by pressing the menu button you can install TWRP (aka open recovery script).
