From The Network Which Promised 5 Androids by Q2 2010

Really what I'm waiting for now is a quad ARM9 core phone using Freescale's i.MX6 chips running Android.

Quadcore laptops aren't common place yet..

what would really be the advantage of a quadcore phone?

I mean.. I personally feel like the atrix 4g is more of a "laptop" than cell phone anyway.

As heavily as the docking abilities were marketed yesterday, i feel its pretty safe to say it falls in with computers pretty well.

Also.. I understand wanting more power.. but, I wouldn't even bother with a quad core laptop..

why a phone.....

Well, at least according to this article. The point of having the quad-core devices are to have the power for extensive 3D gaming, while providing exceptional power consumption, their example is getting 24-hours of HD video playback or 30 days of standby time. With these processors you should have no problem getting through a day of usage with your phone. Or you can play PS3 quality games on your phone.

It sort of reminds me of one of the first 2GB Asus netbooks.

The article never says ps3 quality phone.. and looking at it I can assure you right now.. it might be "impressive graphics".

However, I really doubt its gunna be on par with ps3.. not with 1.2 ghz quad core processor and a 1 mb cache.

Impressive? yes
3D? sure!

PS3 quality? lolololol.

If someone wants to correct me or disagree feel free.

But, I have a feeling we are about to start seeing a push more than ever towards "all in one" devices.

I have no doubt it will be more powerful than what we have to day for gaming, productivity and the works.

But, I expect to see a lot more of a push to docking into a laptop, or connecting a full sized monitor.

This might completely replace the desktop for the average users.

People like me will always have a quad core desktop or whatever the latest bells and whistles are.

but, to expect ps3 level graphics is a bit extreme.. especially when the article doesn't even mention PS3..

Then again on a smaller screen it will probably take less effort...

so "ps3 level graphics scaled down to a micro screen" maybe..

Just don't expect to plug it into a 1080p monitor and get the same "ps3 level graphics" you get on the smaller screen...

@ buzo.. was it at least running full windows 7 or something?

Haha no way. Right when netbooks came out, there were like 2GB, 4GB and 8GB variants. They all used SSD's with Linux. They did not adopt the 1.8" HDD's yet. They had like 7" screen sizes as well. In this respect, it is somewhat close to a first generation netbook but no where close to a laptop or a modern netbook.

@Snow Fox:
Yes, I know that PS3 comment was actually from another article that I had read right before I pulled that one. I don't actually know how exactly how powerful it would be. I don't know how powerful the processor in a PS3 is either. I would think that the gaming potential would often be very reliant on the actual graphical unit just as much if not more so than the processor itself.

Oh, and I don't think I was saying PS3 level graphics. I was saying more the efficiency and the actual power for running complex programs and games smoothly, but not necessarily as clear graphics in them.

Well the reason I am saying it is like a netbook is because,

Even if not on par with full scale processors.. dual core 1 ghz processor + 1 gb of ram is really above what you would expect for a phone. It also has 16 gb internal storage which is really all you would need for anyone who isn't "hardcore".

I saw "2gb" and thought you were referring to ram.

I mean its already above first generation netbooks going that route..

I am one who hates to coin a new term for every phone that comes out..

but, seeing that mac-like os on the laptop plus desktop station.

I would be surprised if for anyone who doesn't webdesign, code, or game this could be in some ways a full on desktop replacement.

I see some of you guys do use mac.. so please do not take this the wrong way.

Macs recent rise in popularity is proof that some people just don't need a serious PC.

yes a lot of people with macs do use them to their fullest with video editing and other mac specialty things.

But, the people at my school who are buying mac aren't doing it because they want something mac is more powerful in.

They are getting it because, they don't need to Code, webdesign or anything hardcore.

If this phone comes out with adequate programs and can successfully use those optimized cores.

For a lot of those people who bought macs.. This phone would work just as well to replace their pc's.

If it can handle some word program adequately and spread sheets along with other office centric programs.

This phone could be a miracle for them.

Sit down infront of the desktop doc with a 23" monitor and keyboard of choice. Type up some school reports.

Send em in.

Grab the doc and go to school and pull it out in class.. teacher says it didn't submit right? no worries file is right there on hand now!

I am not trying to say mac is anyway inferior to pc but, a lot of people get them because, they only need word, facebook, and don't want to worry about virus's.

If that phone can pull it off how is it any less of a full fledged computer to those people?

If those people make up the majority then aren't we the ones with skewed perspective?

I hate using this logic.. Especially as a computer science major. I sometimes feel like people with no idea about what they are talking about are trying to dictate to me what is and is not valid in my hobby and passion.

However, that is the nature of the tech world. The enthusiast have to deal with the majority.

I totally can follow this logic

Well, I am a Mac user but one of the one's who use their machines to their fullest potential. Most Mac users have never heard of a Mac Pro yet I am one of the few who find it as not having enough power.

Back to the phone issues, I find it hard to say that dual-core 1GHz processor in a phone is more than what you would expect. I find it easier to say that it is the way of innovation. Think about it, a little over a year ago you could use that same argument for a 1GHz snapdragon phone. Before that, you could use a similar argument for running multiple apps at once and before that, third party apps at all. This can go on and on to capacitive touch screens to just smartphones in general. This is more of natural progression than anything.

The reality is most people don't use any of the tech they own to the fullest be it computers, phones, etc etc

I only added the disclaimer because, as much as I don't like apple for my own reasons, I still completely respect your right to do whatever you want with your money. I also respect the fact that your needs are different from mine... but, some people get seriously defensive when I say things similar to what I said.

1ghz snapdragon phone was a surprise too.

Its not that I never imagined it would happen.. more its just amazing that it is happening at all.

I know its innovation but, snapdragon was the first time I seriously paid attention to phone speeds.

Then I heard about dual core and thought about it.

But, until seeing the motorola vid yesterday, I never really dreamed a dual core phone would actually go so far as to be a portable dockable computing device.

I thought it was an incredibly crafty idea they had and it really could for your average user by the "all in one" device of Star trek.
