From where exactly does "Knox" come from?

I have decided to upgrade from 4.2 to 4.4. Which one? 4.4.1 ,4.4.2, or 4.4.3, I haven't decided yet. Many of those that upgraded from 4.2 to 4.3 got infected by Knox. My impression is that it was only an added download from an official Samsung related website. Pure 4.4 (from
Google) doesn't contain Knox. What about AT&T is that another source? Where is the best place to obtain a clean, non-altered Android 4.4?

root and custom ROM. i recommend CyanogenMod.

but, Knox will trip an efuse if you root which voids your warranty. as far as i know that is all i think it does. it is some way to prove you rooted, as we used to simply unroot and flash stock so they would never know.

Here: What is Samsung Knox?

Rooting your device is still very possible if you're on Android 4.3 or 4.4 :)

Right now pretty sure CyanogenMod is only support on the Dev version of the Note 3, so you might want to avoid that at the moment.

Might want to check out some other ones, there are some good ones. If you just tell me your carrier I can point you in the right direction.

Roms are not universally available or interchangeable. If you want to move from 4.2 to 4.4.x you have to have a rom built specifically for your device. If you don't own a Samsung device then the Knox issue is moot. That's only available on newer Samsung devices.

Contrary to popular belief, Knox was not created to prevent users from rooting their devices. Knox is an added security layer to make devices compliant for businesses or government use. The fact that it detects when a phone has been rooted is just part of that security. I think Samsung is trying to stick a fork in Blackberry.

Let us know what you are going to upgrade and we can better suggest which options might be best.

I have a Rooted, Samsung Galaxy S4 SAMSUNG SGH I337 4.2.2. Broadband version I337UCUAMF3 kernal version 3.4.0-812098. se-infra@SEP-103#1
Build Number JDQ39.I337UCUAMF3
SELenix status permissive. With AT& T

I know for a fact that Towelroot will root 4.4.2. I've got it on my S5. And since it's just rooting and not a custom recovery, Knox isn't tripped.

I'm not saying otherwise :)

I put out a general message to members warning them that there is a possibility, letting people know is the first step in avoiding situations that are distasteful :D

Glad to hear you got your device up and running though.

i had an S4 that tripped the Knox e-fuse by just rooting. it was not a custom ROM, didn't even install a custom recovery. it also caused general instability and had issues with signal after, not sure if that was coincidence or just bad luck though. i do know it 'disabled' Knox.

but my root method was to avoid the need for unlocking the bootloader and wiping all my data. since my only internet connection is 4G hotspot on the phone i was not going to download over 2GBs of music and apps again.

Was it CF Auto Root u used bro? I think that installs a rooted stock kernel so would trip the efuse :(
