To select text in the Gmail app:

When you're viewing an email, press the Menu hardkey, select More... and choose "Select text". Then simply drag your finger over the block of text you want to copy. It's rudimentary but it works. Unfortunately it doesn't work on the quoted text area when you are replying to an email, but hey, it's a definite improvement on going to the webmail client.

Right guys for those running the following firmware (1.21.405.2) on a VIRGIN MOBILE (possibly others) issued handset this is how you can get the update now without rooting (this is using a genuine HTC release THIS IS NOT a custom ROM):

1. Purchase a spare SD card. (A 2GB card can be picked up at ASDA or Tesco for around

Find out which installed apps can be moved to the SD Card with a simple, small app:
SDMove (AppBrain)

Hit Menu->About to find out what the colours mean.

Saves checking each app in turn - like I did before finding this...

When I try to install SDMove from AppBrain, it tells me that I have 2.1 on my Desire (and of cause it won't install), but I updated to 2.2, 3 days ago!!?? it also says 2.2 under, 'About Phone'>, Software information.
Can anyone explain this?

Disregard. I've downloaded and installed SDMove from the Market and it works - no problem.
Great little utily. Desire rules.

Can anyone confirm if the above method works with o2 phones?
Thank You.

So long as you have 1.21.405.2 I think it would be fine. Most of the sources for the guide don't specify specific carriers. However I have as its the only one I can vouch for. Be the pioneer for O2 users on here :D

Anyone else getting "Car Mode Enabled"? This only happens when I plug the phone in with a charge only USB cable (i.e. not data). I get a car icon in the taskbar and the only difference I can see is that the backlight does not go off.

I have Googled this and can't find anything on it.

I don't even get it with the USB plugged in, in fact haven't seen anything that even relates to it on my phone, is it definitely on there?

Definitely! Unfortunately, I can't take a pic as its my only camera at the moment. Will try again when I get home and take a picture of it.

I now wonder if this "Car Mode Enabled" thing isn't part of Froyo at all and may be part of some other app running in the background, but I can't imagine what though. As I said, all it seems to do is keep the backlight on.

Very odd indeed! keep us posted :)

I followed the same instructions at the weekend with my de-branded orange phone running 1.21.405.2 and it worked ok. I couldn't find my original goldcard so I copied the contents on my current 8Gb card onto my laptop, reformatted, re-created as a goldcard and then copied the contents back onto the card. This worked fine with all my settings saved and I won't have to worry about swappings cards for any other updates:)

Following on from previous messages about the Car Mode...

I could not replicate this with my micro usb cables at home last night. It seems to only occur with my setup in the office. This is:

An old Nokia mini USB cable (data/charging) which now has a mini to micro adapter on the end so it fits my Desire. In this configuration, there is NO data connection at all. It simply charges the phone over USB. Battery info says Charging (USB) as normal.

I have also tried this with an in-car charger but the car mode does not come up that way.

So I speculate this has something to do with the adapter shorting a connection (or not having one at all?) which somehow triggers this mysterious "Car Mode".

I wonder if its some kind of feature for future car docks? Who knows.... As I said previously, all it seems to do is keep the screen and backlight on.

More Googling last night didn't unearth anything about the Car Mode, so I am stumped.

Answers on the back of a postcard please!

What a numpty. Forgot to search Google's dev website for answers. Looks like the Car Mode is simply a UI enhancement that allows apps (if they are written to do so) to change their UIs when the phone detects its in a car dock.

From Android Developers:

UI framework
New "car mode" and "night mode" controls and configurations allow applications to adjust their UI for these situations. A scale gesture detector API provides improved definition of multi-touch events. Applications can now customize the bottom strip of a TabWidget.

For more information about the new developer APIs, see the Android 2.2 version notes and the API Differences Report.

Are you using Chrome or Firefox? The one I use with Chrome works fine, perhaps the Firefox one isn't as good as it's not google based?

I tried your method and it did not work,i assume you cant debrand a o2 phone :(

None at all,i went through the entire process and when it finished the phone still had the same firmware version as before and the update was not available.

Im just going to wait for the official update,it should be here in a couple of weeks.

Any text you send is copied to the clipboard on the phone so you have to paste it into an editable text field to see it.

so if you have noticed there is an option on every app on android market tha says "automatic update" which means that if that option is ticked you won't need to go and see what app needs update...does it work for you? i installed facebook app 1.3 and ticked automatic update..yesterday there was a newer version 1.3.1 but did not updated itself...am i missing something?shoudn't fb app just throw me a notification that it was updated to 1.3.1 by itself???

The FF plugin does everything the Chrome one does. I would suggest selecting 'Automatically launch links' within the app.

Try these out:

A link should open in the browser: Google

A map link should open Maps: Tower Bridge - Google Maps

A phone number opens in the dialer (highlight and then right click and send to Android) : 0208 123456

A YouTube link opens in the YouTube app or whatever your default is (link is in the top bar): YouTube - ‪Evolution of Dance - By Judson Laipply‬‎
