Froyo on Vibrant?

Been hearing the holdup is the modem for data working right with these phones on 2.2. A lot of the custom 2.2 Froyo ROMs are having data issues as well.

For what its worth anyways.

I will concur with this. I've seen numerous posts from folks running a custom 2.2 ROM complaining about data speed.

I am wondering if it has to do with Tmo having a bug up it's ass about tethering. 2.2 from what I understand has tethering built in. Tmo wants to charge $15 a month to allow you to tether. The froyo update may be delayed because Tmo wants to cripple our ability to tether without paying extra.

That sounds like a viable reason for the delay. I don't know of any carrier that lets you tether, at least "legally," without paying a premium for the "privilege".

Nope, that's not it.

Otherwise, AT&T, Verizon and Sprint Galaxy S phones might already have 2.2.

It's Samsung. There's really no one else to blame here. I couldn't believe that it's 4 carriers holding this up rather than 1 manufacturer.

Plus, my Droid X with 2.2 still doesn't offer "out of the box" tethering.

Not that big a deal. Root + Wireless Tether works just fine.

The other thing that may be going on that that the carriers are not happy with the version of 2.2 they got, this may be due to all the issues the GS has had with GPS lag and the likes. They may be throwing back to Samsung for more proof of concept training.

You have to remember that the Carriers are paying for the replacements that they are sending out to each "broken" phone and then have to pay someone to diagnose the issue, this is costing TMO a fortune and I would guess the other carriers as well. If Samsung screws up it is the Carriers that get the black eye not Samsung.

The Nexus S (or whatever it's called will be an official google phone) so Google will let Samsung have access to the latest updates much quicker.
This is incorrect. Google will not allow Samsung to have access to any updates quicker just because it's a Google phone. It is due to the fact that Google phones don't have any Company UI overlaid on top of the Stock Android, so the update doesn't have to be tweaked or altered to work with it. Stock Android OS always get updates fast for this reason.

For whatever reason, Samsung cannot get it's altered 2.2 to work well on it's many varieties of Galaxy S devices. IMO they have bitten off more than their devs can chew by selling so many devices with differing hardware. The answer for me is to install a custom Rom and to hell with Samsung. Still love this phone, though, at least they got the hardware right.:)

Nope, T-Mobile has the ability already to throttle down your unlimited data once you reach you 5gig a month maximum. Still unlimited but just slower whether you're tethered or not.

Google releases the Android upgrades at the same time, for everyone. Samsung, Motorola, HTC, etc., all can access it at the same time via AOSP (unless they are making the pilot phone, like the Droid or N1) and tailor it to their hardware. The Galaxy S series is probably taking so long because of the special "new" hardware Samsung chose to use, and now has to tailor (read "break") the software for it. Keep in mind that it was their choice to use that hardware (ahem, GPS chip), and it is the consumers that have to pay for their lackluster performance. I started the countdown clock when the I9000 upgrade dropped, there is really no reason for it to have taken any longer than the I9000 upgrade, as the carrier-specific ones could have been worked on in parallel and submitted for testing prior to the release of the unlocked update. But that would require planning, management, and efficiency- none of which are Samsung strong points. :/ I seriously get the sense that Samsung is using less than 5 unpaid interns as the Android development team...

Then I think they are wasting time on their ridiculous UI overlay that no one wants anyway.
If life was fair the OTA would be an update to stock Froyo.
Then stock Gingerbread when everyone else gets it.

Well - yeah and no.

The Evo had 2.2 leaked by the end of July (special beta via OTA from Sprint) and just days later (8-3) had the full official release - the first besides the Google-direct Nexus.

With the tethering ability nice and crippled, just like you'd expect, because Sprint charges for that, same as tmo wants to.

If HTC and Sprint could it done back then and that quickly to boot, then that kinda proves that integrating Froyo with a custom UI and crippling the tethering feature is nothing more than a matter of corporate will.

Much as it sux to wait - I'd at least be hoping that the update gets some serious QA and defect fixes for the elusive GPS problems Samsung's admitted to on their Galaxy series.

As for Gingerbread - we're all going to have to see how the makers and vendor decide to deal with tossing out Sense, Motoblur, Touchwiz, Ninjawhiz, Geewhiz and anything else - because I keep reading that Gingerbread is all about upgrading and standardizing the UI.

And I won't assume that these guys building market-differentiating interfaces will just roll over, toss them out, and say, "Thanks, Google!" But - ya never know.

In my opinion, and your mileage may vary.

I found the new date... its the 12th of never.

Does anyone still have hope?

Well...it does appear to be getting closer. Maybe like when you're on Mt. Everest you're closer to the sun than when you're in Badwater Basin in Death Valley.

Even so, JK6 has been leaked and the devs are working hard on their custom ROM's. I'm using it right now and it seems good overall, albeit with the bugs expected in any leaked ROM.

Wonder what the Vegas odds are on this one?

Best baloney line ever, courtesy of a stock site just before the dot-com craze:

"Experts say you can win, and win big, if you know what to expect!"

Can't give you odds on Froyo, but I'd say that your odds are better than 50/50 that that quote could be accurately applied to predicting the date.

I don't mind installing a custom rom but the problem is that the few rom out are for the internationl version of the galaxy s. I already tried to install one. It was buggy, laggy, the volume buttons were inverted and the back and home key didn't work. Id appreciate anyone who lead me to a good rom to install on it

Well, I'm now on the second T-Mo leaked 2.2 (JK6), and it seems about the same as the previous one, but a bit "snappier", so to speak.

Haven't had a chance to test battery or GPS, as I just popped it on late last night (Still need to put teh JK6 Modem on, too), but overall between this and the Epic's official OTA 2.2 release, things aren't looking so bad.

Battery and GPS are about the same as the previous 2.2 (un)Official release... Still a bit snappier. Still need to check out the JK6 modem.

I'm really not happy about the delay on this. Microsoft is supposed to lead the game in delays. I would really like to use Skype and certain other apps, but I must wait for 2.2.

Does anyone feel like T-Mobile/Samsung may be pushing out a Gingerbread build faster since this is a premium phone?

Why would anyone think that?

They will probably wind up 3-4 months behind the competition for froyo, I'd be pretty surprised if we ever get gingerbread.

Yeah this is so fkn disappointing. Here I am again, stuck with another behind the curve phone that I paid too much for. No need to say more.

/rant

And no I can't install a rom. I can't even root my pos phone because it won't go into recovery pressing volume + power.

ARE YOU HARDWARE LOCKED? ** Please note this is for JI6, if you are running froyo do not do this **
untermensch has a fix for those who are HWL'd that seems VERY effective. I always heard some who updated from JFD to JI6 had the HWL fixed automatically, but that was not the case for everyone. It appears those who updated OTA got the fix, but most who did ODIN or Kies did NOT get the HWL issue fixed.

Please see his excellent thread by clicking here. Hope this helps.

If you are using froyo, I imagine you could revert back to JI6 and flash this to fix the HWL.
