Froyo release day - Nov 11th

i would like to point out a few things regarding froyo.

-it ll kinda suck going back to square one for the root crowd with samsungs awful stock buggy kernel but im sure the guys will get on that fast (i may just hold onto 2.1.1 until they do

-froyo....may....not....be.....that.....great. let me clarify that. from my droid x 2.1 to 2.2 experience, its not going to be revolutionary. i want it mainly because a lot of the devs are holding off on really going into rom and aosp because they dont want to start over.

but basically besides a few other things the main 2 reasons for froyo are flash and the jit compilier. and the thing with flash that im sure others on 2.2 can attest...its not that great. hulu is blocked from mobile phones (and thats half the reason for wanting it) but it can be gotten around by hacked flash but you need root and someone to develop it (like on the nexus 1, droid inc)

also for those who are nerdy like me farmville is blocked for android (although if you use a browser with user:agent you can change to desktop and get around it...but be on wifi or its too slow) fox.com and abc.com do work...i believe

the jit compilier is a bigger deal for performance increases, but only snapdragon core phones really take advantage of it. quadrant and linpack scores and real world performance went through the roof on htc phones and everyone assumed omap phones would to, but no. droid x quadrant scores went from ~1300 to up to around ~1550...good increases but not the doubling the snapdragon phones saw. and i can attest the speed increase and smoothness was there but not to the extent that it was the holy grail or something.

so yes be excited/impatient about froyo, but i guarantee most of us will be in here the next day saying "i cant believe froyo stinks!", "whats wrong with my froyo, its not faster!" "flash is worthless except for annoying ads!". so just an fyi

I like the changes in 2.2... I had it on my Eris, and was kind of sad to have to go back to 2.1. The market changes alone are worth the update, and the JIT compiler made a big difference in the smoothness of how my phone operated.

I'm definitely looking forward to Froyo.

oh im not saying its not worth it, but at the same time its not the end all be all. also your eris was a snapdragon core phone  that takes better advantage of jit.

also the froyo market is already available for us at xda. :D

So if I update to 2.2 then my root will be gone?
I have my font changed and stuff from rooting(superuser)... would that be gone and I have to redo the whole thing?

when 2.2 comes out in the ota and you install it...your data and all from the phone will be wiped just like a new phone (your sdcard will be fine, and internal photos on the rom are fine). essentially its a data wipe. you ll have to reinstall any fonts and reroot. themes from 2.1 though will not be compatible with 2.2, they ll have to be reported.

usually if you wait for the ota to be pushed out from xda though when one of the devs plays with it, you can load it in clockwork and keep root....usually, or worst case reroot.

FWIW, I stopped by a Verizon store today, and the CSR checked her news feed (whatever that is) to see if they had any info about a Froyo update for Fascinate. Nothing on the schedule for the next 30 days.

I have no idea how accurate/informative her news feed is, but just passing it on...

I am wanting the phone to run TW with Google like it was suppose to. That is my main gripe with this phone and should be solved with 2.2. If it had a tiny bit less lag and google I don't think as many people would have rooted it or switched to Launcher pro the day they got the phone. Just my $.02

csr know absolutely nothing (in general) when it comes to updates, future phones, or even much about the phones in general...ie telling people they need task killers to help with battery life #fail.

honestly, people who read the various android blogs and forums know more than most people who work in a store.

i remember when the bb tour 9630 was about to come out and i wanted one. i called verizon to confirm the date of my yearly my verizon updgrade and i was like a week away and they tried to push some random windows phone on me. i said i was waiting another month for the new bb tour 9630 and the woman tried to convince me no such phone existed and that the curve was their "flagship bb" for the near future.

i gave her the crackberry.com web address, told her to look at the pictures of the vzw branded device with verizon's internal documents and leaked phone manual. she said that "websites are misleading" and i told her to have a nice day, and hung up

Yeah, the vast majority of the time CSR's aren't told anything on upcoming phones until Verizon actually releases the information.

I remember when I had my Droid X and I had found out (online obviously) that the Fascinate was supposed to be coming out within a few weeks, I went to the Verizon store to inquire about it. It ended up being sort of a waste of time. I asked them if they had heard about it and not one had. I even went through the specs I heard about and the whole 9 yards. They looked at me like I was crazy. The only person I found in the store who possibly could've known about it was a Technician who apparently kept up with the rumors and such. However, he said he wouldn't say anything about upcoming phones anymore because most of the time the specs and such change so much that it ends up being different when it's released. He did confess he had heard about it, but he just wouldn't elaborate anymore than that.

They're usually informed about 1-2 weeks in advance, at least that's how it is for AT&T employees.

They can get fired if corporate finds out that an employee leaked info prior to official launch, hence the "let's play dumb with the customer!" experience that most of have had.

There was one woman at the Verizon store who looked at me with a blank face as I inquired about the Fascinate (obviously pre-launch). She wouldn't look me in the eye and I finally said, "You'd make a decent poker player." and she walked away, as if she couldn't maintain the feigned ignorance anymore. I even showed them the pictures of the Fascinate at that pre-launch party, where a Verizon rep was answering questions.

100% agree! One of the things I liked the most in Froyo on my Eris was the stock keyboard - I miss having punctuation on the spelling line...

What will happen to the launcher apps like ADW, LPP, when 2.2 finally comes to SF? Would they still work fine?

Just save your layout.. the only thing it won't restore properly are widgets.

yes you could do that, however usually best practice from differing os is not to restore any kinda app data. it *should* be fine (and i risk it was angry birds :D) but developers will tell you it can cause instability/conflicts and fc's. and really for lpp, theres nothing that you cant replicate in 2 mins anyway

Just wondering, why are we thinking the 2.2 update will do a data wipe? The only android phone I've owned that did a data wipe on upgrade was the Eris. The Droid, Incredible, and Droid X did not.

It only saves the launcher settings and layout, not actual app data, so it's safe. Just go to LauncherPro's Preferences/Backup homescreens & settings. Yeah, you definitely don't want to restore with TiBu or anything like that.

true, you dont have to wipe data. i didnt on my droid x and it was very screwy and magically was better after a data wipe however. given the potential negatives of *not* wiping, why wouldnt you though? all your contacts and apps are backed up by google, and at most you have a minor headache redoing some customizations.

and good call Kaessa i forgot about lpp own backup vs titanium :D

My sentiments exactly, I'm predicting a big letdown. The only reason I'd jump on it is for a true GPS fix, otherwise my phone is flying on 2.1 after proper optimization. After the dust settles and there's a nice stable CM or similar ROM I'll get it but I'm not really salivating at the prospect.

good call :)

i think froyo will help day to day performance a tad, and it ll be nice to really compare apples to apples with fascinate and dx, dinc. other than that though, i really dont miss flash THAT much.

I will be getting my fascinate tonight or tomorrow, I am coming from a Droid X. The one thing that I seem to be hearing from this thread is that the fascinate is doing well out of the box which was not the case with the X. Ok now came 2.2 OTA. I thought we would get alot of fixes for the bugs, instead, we got more bugs. I cant wait to play with the Fascinate now. I know I can wait and I will be a little leery about the 2.2. Just me though.

I don't see it being out before January. I had the fascinate for about a month and a half and returned it for an Incredible due to several warrant issues and i coudn't be happier now. I have no faith in Samsung anymore.
