Froyo RUU update available

What troubles are you having?

- Friend widget is a little wonky. More often then not I have to hit the refresh button on the widget twice to get my Twitter and Facebook updates (updates twitter on first refresh, second refresh then grabs the facebook updates, some of which happened before the twitter updates that were pulled in the first refresh).

- Browser seems a little sluggish on certain sites (howardforums), whereas when on Telus firmware 2.1 my browser seemed to be a little more responsive (and alot more responsive when viewing howardforums).

-Recording videos, I have mine set to 720p, videos playback freezes when I pan and then skips to a later part in the video.

After you did the update, did you do a factory reset to wipe the phone? I recommend doing a reset to clear the cache and data, and let the firmware load clean. It seems to fix some issues like this.

The Android software has a bug in the video recording that does not adjust the ISO when it's set to Auto. Go into the settings for the video recorder and set the ISO to 400 or 800 and it will fix that. In fact, I set mine at 400 and leave it there. The ISO setting controls both photo and video, so the 400 is a decent middle option.

Hey thanks for the quick reply!

I changed my ISO to 400, it was improved but there was still some skipping.

As for the factory reset, I didnt immediately do a factory reset. After I flashed my phone the phone booted up. Do I go through the setup (setting up wifi, google/facebook/twitter accounts) first then factory reset right after finishing the setup, or do I have to factory reset before?

Forgot to say, but yes I did do a factory reset (under settings menu), but this was not right after flashing my phone, this was probably a day after when I started realizing there were a few bugs.

It's probably related to your other issues.

Sounds like the flash didn't work properly...there could be some data corruption. Try flashing it again, but this time use the memory card method where the file is placed on the SD card labeled "update.zip" and you go into recovery mode. When you're in recovery, clear data first to wipe the phone, then run the update. See how that works.

Note that the phone may not let you flash the same version over itself...I'm not sure. But if it complains, follow the downgrade instructions from the same post, then run the update on the memory card from recovery mode, remember to clear data, then update.

I have a Telus HTC Desire updated already on Telus-branded Android 2.2. Can I still unbrand it by flashing it with the stock HTC Desire Android 2.2 rom? Thanks in advance.

"If you install an official branded update to Froyo, e.g. Vodafone's, you will not be able to install this."

I'd be really nervous to try this as it could brick your phone.

This kinda sucks....I kinda regret now going for the Telus-branded update...because bloody Telus disabled EDGE!

I think that all of the people that used the Ruu did not want to be bothered with the garbage from the carriers and being able to get all updates from HTC, I still cannot understand why anyone that does not have service with Telus would put a Telus update on their phone, not the sharpest pencil's in the box that's for sure!:D

Hello,

I'm new here and a real noob about this stuff.

I too regret updating my Telus Desire to the branded update as it knocked out my EDGE data running on a stripped down Rogers network (Petro-Canada Mobile). What is the safest way to go from Telus 2.2 to stock 2.2. Is it even possible?

I would be very happy if there was a way just to enable EDGE data on my Desire, as everything else works fine. Thanks in advance.

That's the part about the Telus version that bugs me, they disable GSM/Edge which is what you would need when traveling.

You should be able to go pick up the 2.29.405.2 RUU or OTA and go from there, be sure to create a gold card (and back up the stuff on the sdcard).

On the original post by teppic, it says (as pointed by dinaro):

It's this disclaimer that is stopping me from going ahead and flashing with the 2.09.405.2 RUU. I'm a noob though, so maybe I don't understand it correctly.

Teppic74 also mentioned a utility he created to revert back to v2.1 so you can root it easily, then update to v2.2 Froyo. But it works to go back to v2.1 and update to branded versions of Froyo as well. The thread is over in the XDA forums:

[HOWTO] Downgrade Froyo (2.2) to Stock 2.1 (ANY HBOOT | WIN/LINUX/MAC | ROOT) - xda-developers

You definitely need a goldcard for this to work on originally branded phones, and if you get a USB connection issue then you need different drivers from HTC for your phone. After reading the thread, it seems Froyo needs HTC Sync v3.x and Eclair (v2.1) needs the older Sync v2.x drivers. So you may need new Sync to downgrade, then remove and installl old Sync to update to Froyo again.

It's a hassle to do all this, but if it works it's worth it.
:)

Well, I went ahead and tried it...and it worked. I used the advice on this forum and successfully debranded my Telus Desire on 2.2 to stock Froyo 2.2. Some considerations and notes on what I did:
- I did not use the 2.09.405.2 RUU, since my phone was already on 2.25.661.2 from the Telus update.
- Instead, used: RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.2_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed.exe
which the process saw as a system update from 2.25 to 2.29.
- The Desire is now debranded and can transmit EDGE data.
- Use the newest version of HTC sync: HTC Desire - Software Download , which was released yesterday and cleared for North America use (previously Europe only).
- use Goldcard Helper from the Market to simplify goldcard creation / installation
- the only drawback, but not a big deal, is that applications are linked to European references , e.g for weather, stocks, links etc.
- I did not attempt a roll-back to 2.1.

Anyways, thanks to everyone who provided the posts on this thread to lead me in the right direction....

Tojo789,
What are or did you notice any differences from your previous 2.25 to the new 2.29? I saw that RUU at shipped-roms and was wondering whats different between it and (2.10 is mine).

Anyone know ?

I didn't notice too much other than the Telus stuff that was removed from the Telus version of 2.25. I never used 2.10 so couldn't compare.

There are no differences, its just a newer build with the latest radio. Apps still need updating from the Market (Flash, Facebook, Gmail, Maps, Street View, etc)

Been running it since I posted it last week

This would be the main reason to debrand, I still don't understand why Telus tears out GSM.

I figured the RUU update would work, I don't see why not.

Download morelocales2 from the market and set it English CA.

Probably to discourage people from buying Telus phones and running them on Rogers.

When i bought my Desire, Telus had recently locked out no-contract sales (i.e., to buy Desire retail you needed to sign a contract) ... so they were aware a lot of people were moving the phones off their network.

That's what I thought at the time too, but oddly enough someone uses the same model on AT&T and claims EDGE data works there just fine, which is odd. I suppose Telus could have modified the firmware so only Rogers gets blocked.

Too bad they did that. I bought mine the very first day I could find a Desire in-stock in my area. It was 2 days after launch and the BestBuy rep asked if I was using it on Telus or somewhere else (he wasn't a dummy), and I lied and said I was buying it for my wife on Telus and got a free SIM card. I couldn't get an unlock code for another 2 days, but that was fine as I played with the phone using it on WiFi and testing it heavily to make sure it wasn't defective, then unlocked it with a simple code for $20.

Anywho, it was my intention to use the Desire on Rogers from day one and it worked great, except for the EDGE data issue which was fixed when I debranded and installed generic 2.09 firmware. I've been a happy camper with the Desire since the day I bought it. And my wife has the HTC Legend and it too works good and she loves it. It was bought and unlocked immediately too, and I've since debranded it and use generic firmware for it (hopefully we see Froyo for Legend soon).

The funny thing is, several years ago (HTC has been around for about 8 years or so) I wouldn't have touched an HTC phone with a 10 foot isolation pole as it didn't seem to be a quality device from what I saw. My first real smartphone was an iPhone (no raspberries please) and it was decent. At the time, Android sucked when it started and I stayed away until I saw v2.1 in action with a big improvement in features, and I was hooked. But today HTC make really good phones...they've improved a lot in the last 2 years and Android has also improved a lot.

There's no going back to Apple or anything else now. HTC lives in my home...even my teenaged daughter knows Apple sucks and she wants an HTC phone next!
:D

For information, RUUs make three checks:

1. The signature of the package is valid.
2. The currently installed software version is not higher.
3. The CID matches.

The first check cannot be bypassed, meaning all RUUs must be signed by HTC and cannot be modified. The second check can only be bypassed by rooting your phone. The third check can only be bypassed by using a goldcard. The CID is dependent on whether your phone is branded or not, and allows HTC to release updates with different branding on the same phone model.

Since this RUU is signed and has the latest possible software version, it will always pass the first two checks.

teppic74, I've got a qn..

Suppose I go through all the steps of creating a goldcard..I get the CID, reverse it, get the image and write the bytes to the card, how do I know that the goldcard is ready? I've read that some card types do not work.

Say I inadvertently create a non-working goldcard, archive it safely, then finally on the day I do need it, I try flashing an RUU, get a SLCD semi-brick and then discover that my goldcard doesnt actually work..

How do I assure that my goldcard is indeed a working goldcard? In short, without doing something so radical as running an RUU which has the potential to semibrick a device (mine is a branded SLCD without an available new RUU), how do I verify the authenticity of a goldcard?

I also want to note that as of now, there is no RUU on shippedroms, with the updated HBoot for my device. I do have an OTA for Froyo, but no RUU.

One more qn.. If my device becomes semibricked again, can I use the rom.zip from the OTA update provided by HTC and use fastboot command to flash it, and in that case will it proceed without a CID error and a HBoot error?

I ask because, last time I ran an RUU, my device was semi bricked , and I had to send it to HTC (I'd forgotten to create a goldcard). I'm just about to get it back. The first thing I am going to do, is to create a goldcard. If my goldcard is successful, I want to debrand it to WWE. Dont want to repeat the same mistake this time.. It took 3 weeks for them to get a new board ready for the phone.

- Browser seems a little sluggish on certain sites (howardforums), whereas when on Telus firmware 2.1 my browser seemed to be a little more responsive (and alot more responsive when viewing howardforums).

I have recently begun having this same problem. I am not sure if it is my router or my phone. I am travelling soon and plan to test it out.

Is it possible to go back to the Telus RUU after being on the unbranded HTC generic one? If so how would I go about doing that.

Thanks very much.
