Help Froyo update problem

hello I'm new here and I bought my milestone recently it has 2.1 android on it and I want to update it to 2.2 froyo but I try to do this using the motorola software updater but it doesen't work , it doesen't find the phone or when it does it says that it's reading the phone data and it stays like that , what can I do? Please help

Install the Motorola Drivers and RSD Lite.
