Froyo's keyboard for the EVO 4G. Loving it.

I just downloaded it and it works great in texts and email but is slow on the forum! Still think I prefer it though.

Hey can someone who has installed this on their EVO, who had the default keyboard and the swype keyboard prior, answer a question? When I start to run the install it says that it is going to replace another application. So if I complete the installation, will I lose either the swype or default keyboard?

Update: so glad I changed keyboards to the Froyo! Much much better for me in all ways! Try it if you have not yet.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I realized that to use the Android keyboard effectively, you have to think of it not as a mere input device, but rather a search engine for words. Enter a few letters and then select the word you're looking for. In this way, the act of typing is a means to find words rather than simple character entry. I can't say it's the speediest way to enter text, but given the limitations of soft keyboards, it is quite efficient and basically error free. The stock HTC keyboard is a simple but clunky way to input words whereas the Android keyboard is a tool for inputting sentences. And that's what makes it superior to the stock HTC keyboard.

My new Swype version on the tutorial showed something about double tapping a word then a list of words for you to choose from showed up so you could correct it but it didn't work on mine. I love Swype and use it all the time. But if I need to speak on some things I long press and hold and bring up the main keyboard. Is this new one everyone's talking about does it have a mic on it also?

Double tapping the misspelled word doesn't highlight it for correction? it does on my version.

Ok so I am installing via the .apk on my SD card and using ES File Explorer. I have the box checked in applications for allowing applications from unknown sources. But when I click ok at replace application dialog window, and get to the Android keyboard installation window and click install, I get a message that says Application not installed and the only button available is "Done". Any ideas why I get this?

Thanks

If you can reinstall Swype, I'd uninstall it and see if that's causing the issue.

Like I said, I swear I had Swype installed when I installed the LatinIME.apk and was never asked to replace the keyboard. That is the apk file you're trying to install, correct?

And just to check, if you go to Settings|Language Keyboard, there is no listing for Android keyboard already?

Correct on all counts, that is the apk I'm trying to install, and under Settings|Language Keyboard I only show Swype and Touch Input. However swype was not installed via apk on my phone, it came along with the ROM I am using, so I can't just do a simple unistall from Applications.

Help. I installed it and uninstalled the multi touch keyboard, but I can't get the Froyo one to show up. It keeps showing the multitouch keyboard even though I uninstalled it, and selected the froyo one in settings.

I pick Swype and it STILL shows the stupid multi touch keypad that I thought I uninstalled. Help!

EDIT : fixed.

What you should do instead of the instructions posted about opening a text message, is press your search button then hold down on the input screen. This will allow you to change input.

Great keyboard!

I think I know what the source of the slowdown in forums is. It appears to be a general slowdown with the browser when the phone is checking for emails or running any other background process. That's why it comes and goes. With Dolphin HD 3.0, it seems to be better, but it still happens.

I get a "server error" when I try to do voice to text. Every time. I have not once been able to use it. Anyone else have this issue?

I get server error sometimes also. I can never speak a long text like in the new video they show of the updated voice search. It shows the guy saying text to so and so and then he says his whole text. I usually have to say text to whoever 1st and speak one sentence or two at a time. If it's real long then I get the server error.

Stock froyo keyboard is my favorite keyboard to type with. Still getting used to how the symbols work.

I have stock HTC, HTC_ime mod, swype and stock froyo all working on my phone. I pretty sure at least one of them said that an application would be removed. Nothing was removed that I noticed.

I am enjoying the FROYO KB, one question tho...

is there a "minimize" KB button or method that i am missing, as was the "down arrow" on the stock EVO KB...?

The back button minimizes the keyboard. Actually, I think the HTC keyboard is the only one with a minimize button. The rest use the back button.
