Root fully functional ROM's

[sequre]

I've been browsing XDA and android forums looking for a fully functional ROM for every day use. It's for my friends phone that we plan on rooting for him. Most of the rom's i found do not have MMS working. I was mostly interested in JT's AOSP Vanilla ROM. I personally have an HTC INC so the rooting process is of course different. Can anyone explain to me what the voodoo kernel is used for and why one would need it? And can anyone recommend a good ROM to be used daily? (2.2/2.3 does not make a difference)
