I don’t know if this is true, but I sure hope it is...and given what I know about those early astronauts and have heard about Collins in particular, I suspect so.
That exchange was, word for word, in the HBO series "From the Earth to the Moon" but that doesn't necessarily confirm its truth. I did read Collins' excellent autobiography "Carrying the Fire" many moons ago but can't recall if he actually said that. I'll have to look it up. It is one of the better astronaut autobiographies and very much worth a read (along with Mike Mullane's "Riding Rockets").
