Help Fuzzy icons and other icon problems

JimKnuckles

Is it just me or do the app icons on the home screen seem a bit fuzzy? They don't seem to look as crisp as on the Evo.

There is also a bit of a bug with direct dial icons. I like to make a folder to put them in. They were getting stuck on the screen and I couldn't move them. I rebooted and it fixed it though.

fuzzy icons means the app developer never anticipated the qHD resolution. Those apps need to update their resource images so that the app includes images for the native qHD display.

If it's a sense icon, there's no excuse. And I do see some sense icons that are fuzzy. Actually, this version of Sense is inferior to the one on the Kingdom ROM ported for Evo 4G. I recall that icon text was smaller and doesn't disappear if the text is long.

So I'll be looking for that improvement in an OTA. There's evidence that this ROM was rushed to meet deadline.

Why did they make the screen resolution so high (I'm assuming this is what it's from?). Everything is so small! Side by side with my Evo 4G, same home screen setup, same widgets, everything is now small...text, icons, widgets, and seems smaller than what it can, it can and should fill up the screen!

Anyway to get this changed? Think it will be an option on next OTA? Don't suggest rooting, isn't an option now, and I won't be rooting me 3VO.

higher resolution means more pixels fit in the same amount of space. That makes images of fixed size appear smaller on the higher density screen. While that might be a downside, the upside is that you have more real estate.

This is nothing new. Icons on your favorite OS get smaller as you change your monitor's screen resolution. If I change my desktop monitor res from 1600x1200 to 640x480, I'll get nice and huge icons and windows. But not much is going to fit in a window that's only ~600px wide. Average web page these days is around 1000px wide.

Android actually tries to minimize this problem, actually, by allowing the developers to post multiple sizes of icons for small, medium, and large size screens. qHD is considered one of the large ones. If screen resolutions continue to increase, Android may have to support a new tier, like x-large or something.

Thank you for exposing the Whys. As you mentioned in your example changing the res on your computer monitor, can we change the res on our EVOs?

I recall a while back that there was a way to specify a different pixel density for android to render... might require root, which is not a solution for you, i know. this caused Android to scale your apps to whatever density you specified. Works great, except when the app was not coded in dips (density-independent pixels). So.. some apps would get all messed up.

No way to force a different res... plus, with LCD, anything non-native is going to be fuzzy. I still prefer small and sharp over large and fuzzy.

I thought I'd read sometime back that the new Sense would feature user-sizable widgets or something.

Agree if it's just an app shortcut with a hard-wired number of pixels that's one thing - but I thought there was a partial solution to this feature?

So far, I see that I can - for example - drag the big clock down to the new Edit - supposedly to change settings - but that's not the answer here.

Ok, maybe my phone is the only one that has this but I doubt that.

I am obviously using HTC Sense, all the icons on the homepage are low resolution!

Put a few apps on your homescreen then compare those apps to the ones in your app drawyer, I bet they look a lot sharper and more crisp in the App drawyer!

How rediculous is that?

I posted this on XDA and someone recommended using ADW...
That is unacceptable that HTC would release a phone like this.

My 3d is nice though with the higher density pixel screen the same icons are smaller, fonts more difficult to read and less contrast.

Any tweaks perhaps to bring the resolution back to to what the evo 4g was (Like we do with our pc's)

Any tricks to get better contrast, just seems a little washed out and not siper sharp,

Older eyes mean smaller sized icons tougher to see, any setting to make them bigger perhaps?

Thanks,

jeff

Your eyes might not be playing tricks on you. The Sense launcher is slightly upscaling the icons on the homescreens. If you look at the equivalent icons in the app drawer, they are perfectly sharp.

For whatever reason, Sense on the E3D decided to keep the 4x4 grid layout for the homescreens, while I've seen leaked Sense ROMs for another phone where they went to 5x5, and icons were sharp.

So it looks like they tried to blow things up possibly due to testers complaining about readability? If so, I think they made the wrong choice. I've decided to use a custom launcher, ADW Launcher, which fixes the blurry icon problem.

See my earlier post in this thread about changing resolution on LCD screens.

I'll look for a primer for adw launcher, don't even know where to begin, just everything , even my people list is smaller.

Making me yearn for my 4g and possibly giving this back, also battery htis morning at 99, after an hout with light usage, 88.

But again, I just want everything readable and bigger and YES, 3d is cool, can you 3d with another 3d user via tango?

Also, ant VOLUME hacks to bring the volume a little louder?

Thanks,

jeff

Unfortunately, without rooting the phone, you can't attempt to make things bigger. This is the disadvantage of higher resolution; everything appears smaller. And the upside is you have more real estate. I've been shopping for a smartphone for my Mom, and she often complains about readability. She doesn't want to have to wear her reading glasses just to use her phone.

Let's keep this thread specific to icon size. There are other threads already discussing the other issues you asked about. Thanks :)

I noticed this too when I had the phone. My Sensation has the same screen size and resolution as the 3D but the apps are very sharp and well colored. HTC makes both phones, no idea what happened on the Evo.

Unless someone can convince me to wait , I think I'm going to give the 3d back and get the evo 4g back.

Side by side with my GF's EVO 4g, the 3D is dissapointing

Lastly, is there a way to add a solid background color behind the icon text labeling to improve contrast and readibility, was able to do this on 4g

Thats it!

Thanks guys!

Really last comment, even text font for messaging is too damn small for these 50 year old eyes.

I think I'm going back to evo 4g...damn

You can change the size of the text in text messages. Go to settings from within the message. I believe there are 2 notches higher you can go.

I'm finding myself changing the text size in any application that it allows me to. Just wish I didn't have to strain so hard to see other parts of the screen...
