g1 tethering

I Have an unlimited 3g service plan on my g1 and while using pdanet, im only able to achieve speeds of .70 mbits or so. Ive heard people are getting around 2 mbit speed. So how do I make my connection speed faster?? im told that if i get a shorter usb cord (using the '6 cord) it might help. and also, im not using the paid version of pda net

If you are rooted and using the CyanogenRom thethering is built in and faster than pdanet.
 
Ive considered rooting my g1 and getting cyanogen-mod, but i need to know if its able to tether through a usb wire as my computer isnt able to connect through wifi.
