Help G2 & Android Market

So I just got my G2 on Black Friday, but I've never been able to download anything from the Android Market. It says "your file will be downloaded", but the download never actually starts. Now I can download perfectly fine from other websites (which is how I got all the apps that I have), but the Android Market never works. The thing says that you're supposed to be logged into Google Talk in order to do it, but I can't log into that either because it stalls on the "signing in" screenm and then after a few minutes it says "Google Talk authentication failed". It does that every time I try to sign in. Eventually I just gave up and resorted to alternate methods of finding apps, which has been successful for the most part, although there are a few apps that I want that appear to only be available through the market. Is there something I'm not doing right?

Yeah, I am new to Android, and I must say it's the best handheld device I've ever purchased (and I thought the PSP was good). There's like SO many things I can do with my phone, I literally spend the entire first weekend just browsing and downloading all kinds of apps. It's almost ridiculous how outdated my previous phone was (2 years old. I rarely ever upgrade phones) compared to this one. I'm just waiting for my extended life battery to come in so I can get more usage out of it.

Well, I am from America, so it's definitely not just a UK problem. I did previously have a general Google account, although I don't think it was actually Gmail because when I registered for it, I linked it to my AOL email account. After setting up my phone I used that google account. After that didn't work, I later created a legitimate Gmail account and I tried to sync it, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I still can't login to Google Talk and therefore STILL can't download from the market.

Though I must say, the concept that you have to be logged into a CHAT account in order to download from an online application store doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me.

The easiest way to pay for apps is using your Google Checkout account. It makes it easy to pay and keeps a record of your payment virtually forever. I have not paid for very many apps, but it is easy with Google checkout.

You don't need to be logged in to Google talk to use the Market, that'd be silly. All you need is your main Google account, and I'm not sure if you need even that. The downloading thing is more likely an issue with your connection. Are you behind some kind of router or firewall? Try turning wi-fi off and downloading apps over the data connection. Sometimes apps won't download for me, either, but if I try it a few more times it eventually works.

But the troubleshooter for Download stuck at "Starting download..." says "Make sure that your phone is logged into Google Talk by following these steps: ..."

It can't be a connection issue because I can download anything else I want from any OTHER website with either wi-fi or data. Just not from the market...

I had an older google account, but the username was just my AOL email address. Would that have anything to do with it?

I am having a problem with this as well on my HTC Desire. All downloads from Market are stuck on 'Starting download', I also have the google talk authentication problem, I have switched from my gmail to my hotmail (which was logged in as a google account), and back again to no avail. I have tried clearing everything out of market (clear data/cache in settings)... None of it has worked. Anyone able to help?

If you are still having this problem, set up a gmail account, and then do a factory reset on your phone and at the set up screen, log in to this account... After doing this (I had a hotmail account originally set as my google account), downloads are fine :) good luck

I did the factory reset and then linked it to my Gmail account and everything works fine now. Only problem is, I lost ALL my phone numbers because I didn't realize that they were all linked to my YOUTUBE account, for some reason. I thought that they were all just saved to my SIM card when I upgraded phones...

You can restore any contacts you may have had in your SIM card by doing this:

Go to Contacts
Press the "Menu" button and select "Import/Export"
Then choose "Import from SIM card"

If you had certain contacts saved to your previous phone (and not the SIM card), then those are probably lost. But all your SIM card stuff should still be there if you're using the same one.:)

I actually found that out reading somebody else's post, but yeah that worked like a charm. All my contacts were still there. Too bad there's no option to export to the SIM card, for future contacts.

You can save them to Gmail, then export a file from them. (It is aklso nice for a number of other reasons, like being able to update them from your computer--they will synch.)
