Root Gaining root with 2.3.4

I'm running 2.3.4 and I've followed Scotty's post on how to root and then downgrade. It doesn't work for my phone however. On two different computers, I downloaded the drivers and other software that he has linked. After checking the sums, I run R3.22 and tell it to use the specific clockwork and then connect the phone. R3.22 runs for a while and the phone re-boots several times then ends with something like "Failed to flash ROM". I then tried the zergRush method and when I start zergRush, it says sending zerglings twice then the error line about "hellions with BLUE flames!". I then tried using R3.32 from the site just to try. It goes through like the 3.22, but then ends with "Is your firmware too new?" error.

Does anyone have ideas as to what I can try next?

P.S. I'm not sure if this is even a factor, but thought I'd mention it. My phone took a swim in a glass of water. After a 48hr "rice treatment" it works other than one MAJOR ISSUE. The display doesn't turn off at all. It stays on full brightness unless I use an external app such as "Screen Adjuster". Even when I lock the screen or turning off the phone. As long as there is a battery in the phone with power, it stays lit but black screen. Like if I paused during a black frame of the credits of watching a movie.

I was hoping if I could root that there would be either a setting or an app that I could use to turn off the display or such. I've never had a real interest in root until this issue, so all of this is a crash course for me. Please help if possible!

You could try the zergrush method in post 2,or you could try the htcdev unlock method Wich has its own sticky.

The htcdev unlock should work, since it does not rely on any finicky root programs :)

Thanks for the response. I do have a question though before I start trying to root again. To your knowledge, is there a way to disable the display or otherwise get around the issue I'm having once I root?

i am not sure of that. it may be a hardware issue, and something not changeable with root acess.

but i could be wrong :)
