Galaxy 5.0

Curious why the Galaxy Wifi 5.0 device isn't listed anywhere here. It's "called" an MP3 player, but sure looks like a good small "tablet": Amazon.com: Samsung Galaxy 5.0 Android MP3 Player: MP3 Players & Accessories

Has Android 2.3.5, Wifi, Front and rear camera, GPS, market, good screen... what am I missing? At $269 seems like a good tablet option. HTC Flyer is probably a better deal at $299 for the larger screen, but if you want portable this looks interesting.

OK, no one replied. After much research, I decided this is the "mini" tablet for me. $229 at BB black Friday. Better software, better/bigger screen, better processor... than my Optimus V. Buying this, adding GrooveIP, buying a cheap VM phone and using their $20/90 day plan. Best of both worlds. Super compact tablet for GPS, games, email... cheap phone for calling.

I just ordered this Galaxy 5.0 from Amazon earlier this morning, just getting that $229 price before it bumped back up. However, I worry that I sort of rushed my research, but it looks like I'll really like it.

The main thing that worries me is if I'll be able to play all of my videos on it, which is a major reason for getting it of course. All of my videos are organized in iTunes right now as .m4v (H.264) files (I've used Handbrake to encode most of them), most having a resolution of 640x480(maximum). On some other forums and reviews, I've read that there have been problems playing mp4 files.

So my question to you, since it looks like you went and picked it up last week, is if you've had any trouble playing those types of files on there? Assuming yours are in the same format, if not, I'd appreciate any immediate feedback you have about the PMP in general.

Thanks for any info you can give me.

Sorry, I ordered from Amazon also a few days before you. Expecting it tomorrow. Even if it doesn't play .mp4 out of the box, lots of apps will. I don't think you need to worry about it. More users of this device can be found here, you might post there: Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0 - xda-developers

I'm in a quandary whether to root it or not. I waited 6 months to root my Optimus and now wish I had the day I got it.

Samsung SII X is 4.5", does everything, thinking of returning my tablet as I can read just fine on it.

Thanks for the responses. I have a feeling I'm gonna love this thing since I'm one of the few people I know who has never had a smartphone. So I won't be disappointed with its "subpar display" as many iPhone pros have said on different forums. This PMP combined with my cheap phone should be a great combo for doing whatever I want. I simply want to avoid paying those data plan rates, which add up.

I do have one more question for you if you don't mind. Are you going to get a screen protector for it? I'm leaning towards getting one, but I wasn't sure which one to get. I'd love any suggestions and to hear about what you think of your Galaxy once you've had a little while to tinker with it.

Just received mine. The display size is perfect. I ordered a screen protector "just in case", screen is too nice to scratch! Don't think it's Gorilla Glass, but who knows. Ordered: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-Samsung-G...item3f0f9ff34a have not received it. Going of to play now. :)

I probably want to get one of these, imminently, if anyone can reassure me that it can eventually be upgraded to ICS. * Are the electronic innards identical to the Galaxy S? * Will an update to Android 4.0 also work on the "Galaxy S wifi 5.0" and "Galaxy S wifi 4.0"? * Do we need a separate forum category for these mini-tablets, or are they included under the Galaxy S phone category?

Would be nice to see a forum added here. XDA added one for both devices. I'm happy with 2.3.5, and wouldn't mind seeing 3.2, but I really doubt they'll get ICS before the thing is obsolete. Don't think inards are the same as an "S", since it has no way of taking a screenshot (that the S does from what I've read), other than installing an app for it.

Just got a Galaxy 5.0 player for xmas- terrific toy. Cases are really hard to come across unless you want a flip type leather case or pouch. I found a silicone skin at an Amazon Store. Does anyone know of other product that shares this form factor?

Search for: Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 Rearth Ringke Case [Black] at Amazon.

Hey dimmsimm,

I've had my SGP 5.0 for about 3 weeks now, and I love it so far. As far as cases go, I also had trouble finding any that weren't the full-on pouch/leather case.

That is, until my second trip to Best Buy, where I found a case by Riot Outfitters... the description says "Case for Samsung Galaxy 5" Powder Coated Black". Just go to their site and search for Riot Outfitters Samsung, and it should be the first result. And damn, haha, as I did that I see that it's on sale for $15, down from the $25 I paid for it...with free shipping!

Get on it if you haven't gotten a different one! I love it, because it isn't nearly as bulky as those pouches, but it makes it feel less slippery (or like I'm going to drop it) when I hold it.

And with that Rearth case you mentioned from Amazon, be careful, because from the pictures, it looks like that's for the Korean (or non-US) version of the SGP, which has ports in different places!

Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions. tcat was helpful before I got mine, so I'd like to pay it forward.

I've had mines for over a month now and carry it everywhere with me. I brought that outfitter case and really didn't care for it. I ended up ordering from PDair it took 2 weeks to arrive all the cut outs line up perfectly. I couldn't be happier and I got a pink one they have other colors.
