Help Galaxy died overnight 40% remaining

xxArmando

Newbie
Hello everyone yesterday I received my Galaxy s4 active, and I left it overnight idle with 40 % battery and in the morning it was dead. Now I took a few screenshots of the battery information hoping someone here can give me some insight. Below are the screenshots, thank you.

But leaving it charging overnight wont really tell me what the problem was , and I am afraid it might happen while is on my pocket idled. Yeah motor I will be turning wifi off at night but the battery info shows that most of the battery was consumed by Android OS and system. And I dont know how to change that.

Android OS, stay awake 8 hours 12 minutes
I suspect that is a significant contributor.

Might I suggest that you install betterbatterystats (available on xda by the developer) and try to see what is causing wakelocks?

I suspect you may find that location services is causing wakelocks. If so, if you turn GPS off when you don't really need GPS level accuracy for location, that should help.

Will download that right now , but I already have GPS off since I received it.

If I may also add I have no idea how to read those apps and such things, But I did hear something about apps running while phone is dimmed off overnight. I'm fairly new to all of this and I'm somewhat confused/Overwhelmed lol.

One other thing to consider - you got the phone yesterday. It is possible that the phone software is not up to date - it may be trying to download OS updates, or profile/PRL updates from your carrier, or trying to sync your various accounts etc when the phone is idle.

Review whether this is happening every night (give it a day or two to "settle" down from the updates). Also, review the results from betterbatterystats to see if there is a particular wakelock (kernel or partial) occurring - that may help narrow down the issue.

I know a lot of people will disagree but turn GPS back on. Some apps will run and try to get a GPS lock, when they can't they just keep searching.

And like jj14x said, just getting the phone I bet it was just updating and syncing. Give it a few days to settle down.

How right you are. Some apps do need location base, that's why you can select to use the cellphone towers instead of GPS. This way saving battery. Another thing the OP can do is use the stock task manager and end all apps by holding doe the home button. I have noticed that when my signal is weak, rather wifi or cell, the battery drains faster.

How do I check for "wakelocks"? and even better what is it? Im afraid I wont know how to use the app if I purchase it.
Check the thread on xda, and BTW, the app is free for xda members. I bought it later from the play store just to support the dev, but you can try it out for free.

The thread explains wakelocks very well - read the first post - the section "What are wakelocks and why should you care about them?"

BTW, did you have the same issue last night as well? Or did it start to improve?

Yep.
I have always left GPS on in the past, but with the S4, and the latest play store updates, I've noticed that leaving GPS on is leading to a lot of wakelocks from location services. I just let the location services get data from cell tower triangulation, and enable GPS for navigation only (automated using tasker)

Your phone is brand new out of the box. Plug it in and leave it on charger overnight.

Not only does it need a GPS fix for most of the apps for initial setup, but a lot of the update processes will hang/snag/freeze up if they are running during a battery death.

While you're at it go into Settings-->More-->About Device-->Software Update and make sure you have the latest OTA updates available, too.

After all that is said and done, and the phone has downloaded all those updates, I highly recommend performing a factory reset. If there are any issues from the DL updates or your battery dying in the middle, that will hopefully clear them up.

Thanks everyone for all the info and tips, last night I left the phone idled at 67 % and when I checked it (roughly 9 hours later) it was at 64%. It may have been a first day thing like most of you said.
