Help Galaxy nexus is using too much data!

Hi everyone,

I just switched from the iphone to the galaxy nexus and I love it. But one big difference I'm noticing is that whenever I use facebook, browse the net or even use google maps I'm eating a TON of data. Using facebook for 2 days has already put me at 25 megs of usage alone.

I realize this screen is much higher resolution than I'm used to so I'm assuming it has something to do with the picture quality of whatever I'm using. Is there any way to control how much data this programs use? I don't want to set a limit for myself because it'll run out quick.

Does anyone know what I can do about this?
 
You can turn off background syncing (so it will only sync when you open the app) on an app by app basis or overall for the phone. I have email syncing, but not facebook. Some even allow more data intensive tasks be done when on WIFI only. I probably have 3-4 GB per month go through my phone, but only 700-800MB on my data plan. And I really don't try to limit myself either as I have an unlimited plan, that's just my natural usage.

Thanks, I'll try that but I don't know if it will work.
I don't think facebook and google maps sync on my phone and those seem to be the highest in terms of data usage. Looking at images seems to be killing me right now, so I think need to turn down the resolution or something.

And I took off a couple of widgets because the auto updating was definitely hurting me as well.

Thanks for the link, but my android os isn't the problem. In a day and a half I've used almost 100mb just from facebook and browsing, which is nuts. I don't have a high data plan so this is going to screw me big time if I can't fix this issue.
 
Welcome to AF strech90 :D

As has been said background sync can't hurt you. I would suggest turning it off just to make sure those apps aren't polling in the background and eating up your data. You could also try using a different browser that formats better for mobile phones "Opera mini" comes to mind but I think there are others that do it too.

You could also toggle off mobile data when you aren't using the phone and try to use wifi as much as possible. I know this kinda defeats the purpose of having a smartphone in most people's minds but keep in mind phone companies would perfer you have a 2GB data plan for a smartphone most the smaller plans will not allow much data use. You could try calling your carrier to see about getting your data plan limits raised for the time being until you figure out your average use. IMO it would be better to agree to pay a little bit extra beforehand than get stuck with a really high bill after the fact ;)

Browsing will murder data on any phone really. The best option is to set your data limit in settings and use Wi-Fi whenever possible. I'm not sure how people use these phones without unlimited data haha.
 
I only use about 3gb a month with lots of streaming music from Google Music and online radio, plenty of browsing, and watching Netflix as well as videos stored on my home computer.. I have a 6gb limit so I'm not afraid to use a lot, but even all that which I do almost daily does not put me close
