Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

Hi All!
Win8 installing now... Will see how it goes.
Happy almost a Friday to you all....
This weekend will be great. The wife and I are headed up to Cambria and San Simeon, CA.. Home of Hearst Castle and lots of galleries, restaurants and moonstone beaches... And our psuedo-honeymoon.

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Hi Pup! Glad to see you this evening, Evan and his little friend are way cute! Hi BB, have you gotten power yet? Any trouble finding gasoline? Nice to see you too Razor, take care of you in these busy times! We are happy to have your RSRSS whenever you can. Halon and Dread, the pics look a little "fisheyed" is that what it is suppose to do? To the rest of our watering hole buddies, have a great evening!

Hi Copacetic! Luckily we never lost power. And gas is horrible to try to find. Thankfully both of my parents vehicles had full tanks (I'm the dope that didn't think of it till Monday afternoon for my own car :o). And today I got to climb the tree that is laying across the state property in our yard and video tape our moron neighbor throwing his debris into the area. Don't know the actual legality of him doing so but he has a big fence up and doesn't have to see it while we do have to see his crap. He wasn't real happy about me taping him and asked what he was supposed to do with the branches....I told him to drag it to the front curb like everyone else in town. Then I sat down for a while to make sure the lovely man got the hint. :D

I am now going to make this something to put on my bucket list - just to see the faces of who ever I can make laugh.

BB, are you seriously going to post a YouTube video of you dressing up and going to the security gate of a nuke plant trick-or-treating? :D

I will be very curious to know what you get - other than a free ride in the back seat of a nice car with lights on top :p

If I can manage it I would totally do it. I wouldn't force my way in - just stand at the gate and nicely say Trick or Treat! I figure at least someone would find it amusing.

Thanks copacetic. It was just one of those moments that hits you as a parent. They were so cute walking down the road together.:)

Win 8 installed, media center installed... Now on to figure out how to reconnect my server.... And then what anti virus I will be using.... And we should be good. Not too bad, and no issues!

So everyone is jumping on the Win8 train, eh? Perhaps I'll give it a whirl tomorrow. Only $15 or so? Does it need more RAM to run smoothly? My laptop has 4Gb, enough?

Hard to say, but probably not, lol. Nuke facility guards take things very seriously. You don't wanna mess with a guy or girl that has an AR-15 and a side arm strapped to them fully loaded at all times. Trust me, these aren't merely rent-a-cops. ;)

Yup and yes.. It's enough.
Just go back a few pages to Copacetic post about turning off all of the non WIN services... That was a key.. That I forgot to do the first time... But I did it the second time around, and it ended up working out perfectly.

BTW, it's working great for me. Only thing not working is the TV tuner, which apparently Sabrent has not gotten their win8 drivers up yet. Otherwise, we like it. In fact my wife told me that's more like what she could see herself using... But we will see!

TGIF folks!

It's actually supposed to run more efficiently than Windows 7 I think. It's $15 if you have bought a Windows 7 PC in the last 6 months (I think), $40 for an internet download install if not purchased within that timeframe, and $60 for a hard copy of the upgrade disc.

Plus one to all of the above on windows 8. I have 4 gb and an i3 with no issues at all. I am really enjoying windows 8. Its sort of like when you put a new rom on your phone and suddenly it feels like a new phone. For $40 I feel like i got a new laptop, pretty sweet if you ask me. (don't forget to get your free copy of media center, it is not included in windows 8 and i think the offer expires at the end of the year).

This made me giggle...

Win 8, huh? Hmmm.... what a decision to make!
I have some more researching to do in a hurry...

On another note to you folks in NJ:

I hope I'm not out of line with this one and I don't want to start a political battle in here, but WTH???

Nonunion Ala. crews turned away from Sandy recovery - WAFF-TV: News, Weather and Sports for Huntsville, AL

Can someone PLEASE explain why a state in such DIRE need of help would turn assistance down over something as petty as THIS?

Utterly ridiculous to me. If I lived in New Jersey I would be burning up the phone line's at Governor Christie's office demanding answers to this one.

Update on my install... Found the drivers for my tv tuner card... Woo Hoo! Also got the win8 system connected to my server. I am using WHS2011 which is also running Norton 360, and protects all of the machines in the house through the server... But I was running MSSE on each machine as well, just as a precaution, which is not available for Win8? Or did I miss something?
I was using MS Security Essentials... Anyone else? And if so what did you plan to use now... Or did you decide to switch? I know they have some of it built into win8, but just curious on the options you guys are using.... TIA

The $40 cost is why i jumped on it plus the free media center. When I upgraded a computer to windows 7 several years ago the cost was about $150. This is a great deal!

Did anyone else use the consumer preview edition prior to upgrading? I can remember using it and not being impressed at all by win8. Has there been radical changes since then?

I am not sure the word radical applies, but the changes that were made make it upgradeable easily, compatible with more devices, and accessible from anywhere much easier... Basically no big changes.
The compatibility is a big thing for me, as well as having it be smoother in touch use... I wasn't impressed with the preview either, but the lower pricing means that more people will adopt, and the market will get better over time since the devs have more access to it. I hope.

So far it does everything that Win7 did for me... Just smoother. Oh and my wife says she likes it better... So that helps.

Personally I love the built-in mail functionality. I can add all of our accounts (have like 5 between the wife and I) and check them all without going to a single site and logging in. I thought I would hate the tiles, but I really like them now. It really makes your desktop more like a phone/tablet interface so it makes accessing certain information very quick and easy.

I also face an upgrade issue because my desktop runs win7 home premium x64, and my laptop runs win7 professional x86. I know going from vista->7 you had to match version for an upgrade. This sounds like I'm going to have to buy two upgrades. :(

Hi everyone. Scanning through the pages I'm very happy to see that it looks like all my East coast friends survived Sandy.

I was "suppose" to fly from Paris to JFK Monday. Obviously that didn't happen so I got to spend a few extra days in Europe. At least I was there and not stuck in a NY hotel like some of my colleagues.

With a big operational disruption like this it takes a while to get planes and pilots back into position. Anyway, it's good to finally be home.
