Galaxy Note 3: Pentile screen unconfirmed

Well hopefully the size of the screen should help you (meaning you probably won't have it as close to your face as you may with a smaller phone).

I remember the day when I was trying to read an article online on my iPhone 4 and realized I was hunched over, squinting, and having to constantly zoom and paw around on the screen. That was the day I decided it was time to switch!

After owning the phone almost a week, I hadn't seen signs of the pentile configuration, until today. Using the stock text messaging program, I can see the pixels on the light background. I will try taking a pic soon. Not a deal breaker for me, but probably will be for some.

Okay, so I wanted to post this up. Despite all other colors being fantastic and my not really being bothered by this, I did notice this while texting outside, so I wanted to post pictures of what the pentile matrix looks like on white-ish backgrounds, on the phone:

I know that's an absolute deal breaker for some. I am fine with it, but it's definitely more noticeable and not as understated as the reviews that even mentioned it, including Rob's review here on Phandroid. I can visibly see the pixels from 1 foot away, but I should preface that by saying that I have close to 20/20 vision (if not better).

Those dots are wayyyyyyy too large and widely spaced to be Pentile dots. Look how sharp the text is, that tells you the pixels are much smaller, and the subpixels (either Pentile or RGB) will be even smaller still.

It may be a bad display algorithm for rendering a certain shade of background, and it may even be an intentionally patterned background that the software author thought looked nice/kewl, but those aren't Pentile dots.

Thanks for the explanation. I always thought that was a sign of pentile matrix. At least, that's the impression I've been given before.

It would be if the pattern was maybe ten times finer in that photo. Earlier Pentile screens with low pixels-per-inch could look grainy and patterny, but most people would need a strong magnifying glass to see any hint of those on a Note 3 screen with its astronomical 388 PPI.

I haven't looked through the stock messaging app yet, but I'd change it to a darker background if possible.

Has anybody went through the settings to see if that can be changed?

There are a number of different backgrounds you can use on the note 2...I would imagine it has to be the same on the 3

I hadn't used oem text messaging for a while. After posting, I changed to a darker theme

My vzw n3 will be here tomorrow, finally! Since you also came from the note 2, do you think the screen is that much better on the 3? I still think the n2's screen is great, so I'm pretty excited if it is noticeably better

I loved the N2's screen. I didn't think a 1080p display, on a "small" device would really make that much difference, but the clarity is extremely nice. Some of the videos I've watched just look too good to ignore the difference the 1080p made.
