Galaxy S II Verizon

Hi,
so the SG II is coming to Verizon as the Function. August sometime I hear. One web site said it won't be 4G, which is a disappointment, but apparently the 3G is pretty fast. Will lack of 4G be a deal breaker for you? Sounds like a fab fone, with gorilla glass, dual core processor, essentially has the state of the art. If its not 4G, I'll have to play with both the Samsung Charge and the Function when it is released, and compare.

One unrelated Android question please: my wife by mistake synchronized her Fascinate with our home PC and put a couple of gigabytes of pics on the phone, now the phone wants to sync that on the air with Google, how do you tell the phone not to sync pics and videos?

THx,
Raja

I'm also debating how much I want 4G LTE. Do I want a Bionic that definitely has it but the other features seem almost second rate next to the GS2, vs. a really sweet display but "only" 3G for the GS2? I live with 3G now with my D1 and is it really that bad?

I'm really hoping the GS2 does have 4G because that would seal the deal for me!

It has HSPA+, with a theoretical download ceiling of 21.something Megabops

Old HSDPA had 7.2, and the Nokia N8 has 10.something, for comparison.

I thought no 4G would be a deal breaker for me as well. But to be honest 3G is fast enough. I am not going to download anything like a movie or any other large file when I can just do that on my laptop and sync to my phone. I don't think 4G is worth the havoc it does to battery life and the extra thickness it adds to the phone, at least based on whats out now for Verizon. My hope is when I upgrade after the SGSII, battery life has improved and the 4G radio has been slimmed down. I am going to wait for the reviews of what Verizon actually releases.

In making a decision, there's one more factor in the decision equation...iPhone 5 (or 4S, no one knows right now) to be released in September. Will be a global phone which is of great value while going abroad.

But there's one thing Android has the iphone does not have, and that's Google Navigation. On a recent trip recently it proved incredibly valuable. Like for instance while in Portland Oregon, all we did was talk "Japanese Garden" and we got turn by turn directions. iPhone's navigation app can't do that. Garmin can't do that. Bing can display directions but won't talk turn by turn. Bing needs to offer that to keep up with Google.

Anyhow, I can upgrade early August, might as well wait till Sept., see what the new iPhone offers, before deciding.

No 4G in function is just rumor at this point, not set in stone officially. Some sources are saying it will have 4G LTE, which makes sense given time they had since original SGSII release. Other sources are saying Sammy will release LTE version of SGSII in Asia in Fall, so Function getting LTE is not entirely out of question. If not 4G, they will follow up with 4G version soon by the end of year.

And you got to remember that current generation LTE radio chips eat battery life like no tomorrow. So if Function turns out to be 3G phone, it will definitely have longer battery life than Bionic.

Unless you live in a heavily populated city such as New York your not going to see great 4G service for sometime. Some websites have reported that complete 4G coverage will not be available until 2013. In my opinion, I would get the SGS2 for 2 years and when your contract is up in 2013, get a 4G phone you can use.
