Help Galaxy S Vibrant - Upgrade to 2.2 - Issue

Here are some more details:

First computer is Windows Vista Ultimate. High end gaming rig.

The second attempt was on a a laptop running windows 7 Home Premium.

The phone is a GT-I9000M on Bell Mobility

In both cases the update failed when the phone screen changed to "Downloading... Do not turn off target"

On the Vista machine, 1st attempt, I got a popup right at this time stating that a device connected to USB is not recognized.

On 7, Everything played out the same, except I didn't notice the popup. (Maybe 7 just keeps these errors in the background somewhere, not sure)

I'm itching to update the firmware and I have a friend waiting for me to succeed so they can proceed. (I'm the guinea pig)

Any help is appreciated.

Third try was successful. First two times I did it, since it was 2 different PCs, I had to install Kies. I hooked the phone up before installing it, which seems to have made a difference.

On the third try, Kies was already installed and I opened it before hooking up the phone cord. Well, the phone went into some USB mode which it didn't do before. Worked flawlessly. So if anyone is reading this post and has the same issue as me, make sure kies is installed and running before you connect your phone. (It may have just been a fluke, too)
