Galaxy S2 calendar will not sync with googlemail

Hi all, first post here so hope someone can help. Had my Galaxy S2 a few months now and all is going great. This is my first android phone and has taken some getting used to. When i bought the phone, i hadn't signed up for a Google account, so i set one up which assigned me a '***@googlemail.com account'.

A few weeks ago, i had the option given me to move to a 'gmail' address and was told the accounts would be linked. Great i thought. My phone was still picking up emails etc but i noticed my calendar was empty. I tried syncing, and nothing. Tried the 'clear data' option and resyncing, still nothing. Reboot....still nothing.

I then decided to add my gmail account as well as my googlemail account, and hey presto, the calendar now works. This hasn't been a major problem, but now my app market doesn't know which is my default account so any updates that come through, show up twice, one for gmail and one for googlemail. Ive tried deleting my googlemail account but the phone says i will lose all my data which is something i am loathed to do.

Can anyone offer any advice? Please note, i haven't rooted this phone

I suggest you do a factory reset and use the gmail account you really want. Factory reset is done by going to Menu > Settings > Privacy and choosing factory reset. Be sure not to reset the internal SD card.

That will erase data and installed apps so using MyBackup Pro may be helpful (avoid backing up Gmail/Google accounts) if not rooted, MyBackup Root or Titanium Backup if rooted.

Hi guys and thanks for the reply. Doing a reset was what i was thinking but was hoping for an easier fix. How painful is a reset? Ive backed up to Kies (which i have read is useless!), and im backing up to Google, but in all honesty im not sure what gets backed up. Sorry, complete nubey here.

If i perform a reset, what will Google and Kies restore? Will i get everything back bar my apps? Ive not paid for any apps as of yet. Will check out MyBackup in the meantime.

When you reset the phone, it restores the phone to factory condition, with no apps installed other than what came with the phone.

My favorite way to backing up data is as follows:

Screenshot of my downloads in Android Market (press Home + Power to take them), use Astro File Manager to back up the apps, look to see if I want to save any SMS (can use an app like SMS back up). Make sure all contacts are saved to my gmail account (they always are), and any bookmarks, etc.

I usually never save SMS because I find I never really need them again. So a factory reset is usually pretty painless, because all my data is stored in Gmail, and the SD card which does not get wiped.

Go ahead and give it a try, you'll be surprised at how easy it is to get your stuff back!

Yes im sure it is easy but im always concerned. Will check out SMS Backup as i have some texts i need to keep. Thanks for the advice, Android is so different to Symbian and it has been quite a steep learning curve. I still find things that amaze me with this phone though, i discovered Google documents a few days ago, thats really useful for me.
